...for the video of Buddy Emmons rehearsing for his ISGC '97 sets. It's the finest display of pedal steel anywhere.

Thanks to Carl Dixon, and thanks for posting this Drew.

I need to block out some time to be able to watch the whole thing, I just skipped around for now.

Some of the parts I caught of Buddy on the C6th neck, smoothly working those pedals, watching the hands in action and the sounds that were the result - might have been a little like observing Michelangelo paint the ceiling at the Sistine Chapel. Cool

Not to overlook the obvious, but Drew Howard? Thanking Carl Dixon?

That's two names I used to see, and enjoy, when I first joined the Forum. Drew, great player, and Carl---I can't say much about Carl, other than, if we had a few more Carl Dixons in the world, the world would be a better place to book a gig. I'm not sure, but I believe it was Brother Herb Steiner who said something along the lines of, "Carl was too nice, to hang with us." Bro. Herb, correct me, if you will. Got a theory question? Ask Carl. Electronics? Call Carl. The Lord's Word? No matter what--If somebody wanted to put a big-block Chevrolet engine in a '68 push-pull, Carl could explain the procedure, 4 or 5 different ways. And always remember his admonition--"May Jesus richly bless you in this endeavor."

And Drew--Man, you play everything with authority. "No accident--I MEANT to play that chord!"

Talking about Buddy.

Watching the rehearsal video reinforced what an incredible talent Buddy Emmons is on pedal steel. And he seems to be having fun all the time.

Steve Gambrell - long time!!! How are you doing? Thanks for the compliments!

Carl's video of Buddy has got me practicing and listening more now than in a long time.

Wherever you are, Carl, a big thank you!

i too miss Carl - the sad fact is this place needs more like him and for whatever reason, those guys with the knowledge have just decided not to participate any longer. those were the sages that fundamental wisdom always flowed from. they had lived the history of the steel guitar.
glad to hear Carl is still around, i actually did a Gone Home check at one point to make sure i didn't miss something unfortunate.

Dear Carl, I sure miss you here on the forum and if possible I would appreciate an email from you to me and let me know how you are doing. I'll keep it personal and quiet if you like. IMO, you are one of many of my friends in our Lord Jesus of Nazareth and Lord knows I'll bet that there are thousands more that believe in Christ Jesus here on this forum. Carl I pray to God that you will ignore the guy that got you upset here, I believe that I remember the incident also and I beg for your forgiveness and hope that this can pass and we can once more enjoy your presence and knowledge here. Your friend in Crist Jesus; Charles Curtis

I too loved Carl's posts. He is one of the reasons I joined the forum after lurking for some time. I always enjoyed and learned a lot from his insight and was VERY disappointed when he quit. It sure would be great if he started posting again and the newcomers could see what we have been missing.

Drew, glad to see you posting. And yes - I think most of us who have spent any serious time around here wish there was some way to coax Carl to get active here again. He is a fountainhead of knowledge and wisdom (which are not always the same thing), at a lot of levels. But I agree with Herb's observation - yes, I think that was Herb that said that.

IMO, this kind of inspiration is why many of us play steel. Straight up great playing - no BS, no filler.

Sometimes, perhaps, it might be easy to take this kind of stuff for granted - e.g., http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=277401 - might be good if some of us let also let Bill Ferguson, who posted this last February here - http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=261576 - know how much we appreciate what he does. Just a thought.

You deserve compliments, Drew! Such a good player--and so young, too! Mr. Green Mr. Green

Remember Bobbe's brief foray into having his OWN forum? I think Carl lasted about two days, max, on there. There was a guy who used to post here, and I don't remember his name, but most of his posts were argumentative--Carl was telling somebody how to do something, and this goober jumped in, called Carl some angry names, after Carl's "May Jesus bless you" coda. Same guy bashed Buddy, in a very profane way, and that did it. Carl was gone. We all love Buddy--But Carl would let you know quickly that nobody loved Buddy more than him.
Like I said--a few more Carls, the world would be better.
