I stumbled upon a 76' SF Bassman 50 for a pretty tempting price (OK - dirt cheap) - It's got the "master" volume control - Seems like I remember reading a post about this a while back - Is that a concern for a Fender amp? or just a personal preference ?
Thanks

To me for steel guitar they are fine. Just turn master wide open and forget it.

Folks that play guitar may have a different opinion.

Personally I don't get why people get so hung up on the Master Volume thing. I have two twins, one a 68 without the master volume, and one a 72 with master volume. I like them both but the nice thing I see with the master volume is that when practicing at home, I can send more signal into the preamp section and the tone shaping seems more effective without the volume being overly loud. I certainly don't use it as an overdrive method, but for me, I like it.

Thanks guys - I am of the same opinion - I don't think it could detract that much from the amps function , but I've read some negative comments - heck , after I've drug my heels about buying it , she's probably gone anyway. . .

I was inexperienced (and naive) enough to surgically remove the MV from a SF Dual Showman Reverb --I was already inside it to do a couple of other jobs.
Regardless of how one feels about the MV circuit, I had been influenced by some writings insisting that just its presence was a tone suck, even if left wide open.
I am now very skeptical of this sort of thinking and I regret messing with it. Maybe it can be discerned in an ultra deluxe hi fidelity application but that's not what these rigs are.
Those are two different discussions, I guess---1) the use of the MV and 2) the presence of the circuit.

I also think that sometimes the discussion is moved by the fact that models that are identified as Fender Master Volume amps are sneered at because they are not of BF vintage. And of course the later MVs also had the pull boost on that knob. Now THAT is not a much loved thing.

The master volume amps get mixed in with the Ultralinear amps, which are not much loved amps at all but might be fine for steel.
