What song do you like opening your night with? My personal favorite is Don't Rock the Jukebox by Alan Jackson; a lot of steel and sets the tone for what I'd really rather be playing.

Honky Tonk. Especially if there's no sound check. The band can play it without thinking, and concentrate on getting the tones and volumes right.

We used to open with "Kiss An Angel Good Morning".

Now we usually open with "Margaritaville".

We used to do Take Your Memory With You by Vince Gill. Now we do Walkin' After Midnight by Patsy Cline. Both are easy to do without much thinking and good for a sound check. They both help to get my fingers moving without making too many clams.

For a pedal steel kick off, I've seen Mike Sigler open up with "Pick Me Up On Your Way Down" on several occasions and just kill it

we always start with Fast as You then straight in to Tulsa Time. Gives us plenty of time to adjust to the room.

Back in the day, American Made, Oak Ridge Boys. That got their attention immediately. Me and the lead player played twin leads on that intro, had a band that nailed the harmonies...fun stuff.

"Strut" by Taj Mahal. The intro is an attention getter without knocking people over and gives the crowd a pretty good idea of what's in store. I play sax on it now but might try lap steel when I get a little better.

Along that same train of thought "The Last Time" or "It's All Over Now" by the Stones.
