I want to add a 6th knee lever to my Excel U12. Right now I have UKL, LKL, LKR, RKL, and RKR. What's a good place to add the 6th one? Center vertical? Center left? |

I have several doubled levers, and the easiest to use is the second LKL.
Doubled levers on the right knee interfere with with volume pedal (for me).
But I think you should consider which existing levers you would want to push at the same time. |

I have 7 knee levers on my Excel U-12.
LKL
LKL2
LKV
LKR
RKL
RKR
RKR2
Since I had gone through the "mind warp" period a long time ago using two left-lefts, it was no problem when I got my new Excel. But that second right knee right (as Ernest so aptly said) was a real bear. I am stil not 100% comfortable with it. But I am slowly getting there.
I would suggest a 2nd Left Knee left. It in all likelyhood might drive you crazy for a while. But like with all things, once ya get used to it, you will wonder how you ever lived without it.
May Jesus bless you in your quests,

I recently added a 6th lever to my Zum. I spoke with Bruce to get an idea about where to place it. The first thing to determine is, what do you want it to do, and will it be used in conjunciton with other levers. The second is will its use interfere with the use of the volume pedal. I chose to put it on the left knee. I placed it in front of the LKL. This allows me to get to it with very little movement and it is out of the way until I need it (LKL2). Seems to work for me. |

Dirk, somewhere on the Forum recently there was some talk about two verticals facing opposite directions. It may be possible to set these up so shifting your knee from side to side you could get one or the other, and in the center you could get both. LKV is a good place to put levers to use with the AB pedals down. With your toes on the pedals it's easy to raise your knee. Otherwise it's awkward to raise your leg to hit these and hold them. At one time on my old ShoBud U-12 I had 7 levers but only used 5 of them and occasionally the LKL outside which would be my choice if I had to have 6 knee levers. But I've dropped the extra two a long time ago and am very happy with 5.

I may be the oddball (wouldn't be the first time), but I prefer a second LKR. Both my U-12 guitars have 6 or more levers. The push-pull has six and the Fessy eight. On the Emmons, in addition to the usual five, there is a staggered LKR. My Fessy has additional LKL, LKR (the 'traditional' Crawford Cluster config), and RKL and, of those staggered levers, the LKR is the easiest for me to reach.
Everyone sits differently and may prefer one over the other for that reason. I tend to sit back a bit and it's more natural for me to slide back and hit a LKR that's closer to the back apron than to slide forward to hit an LKL closer to the front.
As a universal player, you may find it better for that lever to be over your B6 pedals. That's my reasoning. I don't have many levers I think of as only useful with E9 or B6 alone. Since I lower E's on my RKL, I like to keep as many useful 6th tuning changes as possible on the left levers.

I have a sixth knee-lever on my Mullen U-12. It's near the center of the guitar. I use it on the B6 side of the tuning. I posted some pictures last year.

On most guitars, you can open up the spacing between the LKL and LKR, and just use 2 verticals in between. I have tried guitars with "clusters" (pedals near the center of the guitar alongside of the ones near the rear apron), but don't like have having to slide forward and back in the seat to hit the levers. I want them right near the rear apron.
One of the things that always bugged me with my p/p Emmons is the "floppy-dingus thing" attached to the (center-mounted) RKR lever...necessary for most players to comfortably activate that lever. |
