What are the favorite thumb picks today? I'v used National M for years, but the last ones I bought from Amazon are terrible--only last a couple of gigs then break. I live in South Texas--went to two music stores looking & no luck.

Zookies for me. I used to bend standard picks in the steam from a kettle until I found those. They don't last forever, but at $1- $!.25 a pop no big investment.

Lee, a lot of players are using the orange Fred Kelly speed pick.
It fits like a glove and performs very well.

PRoPIk, at a steel show Tommy Dodd turned me on to these kevlar tipped animals, he custom ground the tip like the tip of a fillet knife and then shrink wrapped the nail side or top, I now hear the root note when I play.

Thumb picks have been a "thorn in my side" for the last 30 years or so.

My thumbs are fairly small in girth, and it's hard to find one that stays put (doesn't rotate on my thumb when striking strings). The worst for me are the ones I like the most - Blue Hercos. The best fitting are the National Mediums, Golden Gates or Zookies, none of which I especially like tonally......but "needs, must"

Anyone else with this problem?

John Pearce - they don't "wilt" when they get warm from playing.

Which is one reason I like them. I wish the tongue was a tad longer. The Golden Gates (if you get the right one) also stays put. Again, I wish they had a longer tongue.

Like Craig said...ProPik...Tommy Dodd sold me the first and I bought the rest from Elderly Instr. and put my own heat shrink on and am happy...plus I have a knot on my thumb and I can bend the metal loop so the knot doesn't get sore from a plastic thumb pick rubbing it....jr

I have that same problem and solved it by wrapping a thin peice of gaffer tape around the pick to stop it from opening . I know there are commercial solutions that are similar but I have had that tape on the one thumb pick for a few years now .

I use my John Pearse thumbpick the most. Sometimes I switch to a Johnson if I want a more mellow sound.

For many years I`ve used metal thumb picks on my old Z.B`s. and five string banjo to get away from the muted plastic sounds.
The metal ones corelate with the metal finger picks and sort of equalize the sounds that`s coming from the ol`steel.
This has come up many times in the past and I find it erasistable not to use metal thumb picks.

All Z.B.est.

Bob.

Hi there Lee,
They're Jim Dunlop 94530 -- whatever the number means, possibly the type thickness gauge.
They last the longest without having to mess around with or file.
The strength is kept there because of the 90% bends either side of the face where it makes contact with the strings.

All Z.B.est.

Bob.

My favorite by far are the white Fred kelly picks. I think they are derlin. They sound very good, the band is not huge like most picks so it stays out of the way. A lot of my friends use them or the kelly speed picks(banjo players).

The best and most comfortable thumb pick I've ever used is this Propik. I'll never use another.

It's less filling but tastes great !
