Can anyone tell me the difference between the Bill Lawrence LXR 16 & the L7 10 , sound wise?.& which one of these would you put in a Emmons Lashley II ? |

In my Sierra, I usually use the 712 (12 string version of the 710) because it cuts thru the mix so well. The LXR 16 is a little mellower, and it tends to blend into the rhythm section more. I tend to think of the LXR 16 sound as "silky", if that makes any sense.
I find myself using the LXR 16 for Hawaiian music and slow country songs. Sometimes I'll stick with it for a long time on low volume gigs. It would be a real good choice for the C6th neck, IMHO.
The 710 is full-spectrum, bright and in-your-face. It's designed for a pot pedal - don't use it with an active volume pedal. It's a fantastic pickup for recording. I have a pair of 710's in my Williams and they sound wonderful.
If you're using an active volume pedal, you might prefer the Bill Lawrence 910. It's supposed to be a perfect match for the Goodrich 10k or Hilton pedals. I've heard a lot of good things about it, but I don't have one.

I used 705's until the LXR-16's came into play. As b0b said, they are more mellow than the 710's and are not edgy or quite as bright as the 710's. I have the LXR-16's in my Zoom and my new JCH. You won't go wrong with them. |

I had an E-66 in my Thomas for years, but then I got an LXR 16, and it was just the right tone for my axe. I'm very happy with this pickup. Sorry I didn't answer your question.

Looked on Bills website and there is no info on the LXR-16 pickup. Out of curiousity what does the new pickup sound like, a 705 for instance.
Also, where can I get more info?

I avoided responding because frankly I don't trust my ears or judgement too well--I suffer from that day-to-day shifting ear, shifting tone-memory thing. But I went from 912 to LXR-16. I found the 912 just a little lifeless on my Carter. Yet, on some days I was happy with it---go figure. I am always looking for a little bit of grit, grain in my sound and it was indicated to me that the LXR would be a step in the right direction. I like it and I do believe it does go that way. I find Bobby Lee's description interesting in that, verbally, what he describes doesn't appeal to me but he has that wonderful advantage of being able to do the Sierra Pup pop-in and can therefore do true A/B comparisons. I'd love to give myself a reality check and drop the 912 back in just to refresh my ear-memory and I probably will sometime soon.
BTW--When I put the LXR in I also put a mini jack on the wire to the output jack and soldered a plug to the Pup leads. At least I can swap Pups now without having to solder/unsolder.
-------edited for the usual disclaimer---this is a description of a 912 in my Carter. Everybody knows that some Pups match up with different guitars in different ways. Jon, from your description I can imagine that the LXR 16 falls between the 710 and the 910. If you like that gritty, in-your-face tone, the 710 has it (as does the Wallace TrueTone). The LXR 16 has some of that, but it's tamer. From what I've heard about the 910, I suspect that it's a smoother sound, more like the GL 10-1.
I haven't tried the 910 or 912, though. I usually use a GL 12-1 when I want to lop off the bite. It works for me!
