Larry I have them in one of my Zum Hybrids and I hear everything :-} ... I have single coils in the other guitar and they both sound very close ! lovely full punchy mid-range and silky highs ....and of course you can adjust each individual string to the nuances of your guitar ...probably the best of the Telonics pickups IMO _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

Just wondering, thanks. I was going to check out the price but didn't see it amongst the other p/u's on the site. _________________ J.R. Marlowe

Interestingly I had been using the 84 on E9th and the 409 is more full bodied across the freq range... everyones tastes are different of course, but I found the 409 to be more suited to what I was looking for.
I have the 409 on both necks. _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

I changed out my GFI II pickup on my Ultra for a Telonics 409. The pickup right now is just how it came from Telonics and I haven't had the time as of yet to tweak the poles for each string. Even so, I can tell a major difference in the clarity of the sounds from the strings, especially running only from the guitar to the pedal and then to the amp, with no other effects pedal in the chain. It really made a big difference, for the better, in the tone and sound of my GFI. Well worth the money, in my opinion. It should sound even better when I get around to tweaking the poles on the pickup.
Also, I was running a reverb box in the chain and since removed it from the chain and started using the spring reverb in the amp. There was also a big difference in the tone, as it seemed the reverb stomp box was robbing a lot of the tone. |

Larry, I have some experience with several George L humbuckers and the Bill Lawrence 705 reissue, as well as the 409.
On both my Justice and Mullen, I really liked my 705's but with the 409 I hear a more balanced upper midrange than the 705, better string separation (especially on the low strings), and an overall sweeter sound. The highs on the 705 tended to be a bit harsh to my ears (though I could EQ that out) but I love how the 409 brings a clarity and sweetness to Hughey land. The lows are full but not muddy. It requires less EQ adjustment at the amp to sound right.
Each guitar will react differently. For example, I had a Derby with a George L 10-1 that I wouldn't have changed for the world. That guitar and pickup were perfect together. Yet I haven't had a 10-1 sound quite right in any of my other guitars.
My Mullen and Justice were very different guitars. One mica/aluminum neck, the other lacquer/wood neck, yet the 409 sounded the best of any pickup I've tried in both, and I love the adjustability of it. On the 705's, I liked to short out the two blades with a paper clip under the third string to adjust it's output level, but with the 409 it's a simple adjustment of the polepieces.
It is a stellar E9 pickup in my opinion. It just sounds "right" to me. I have not tried it on C6. Your ears may vary. |

Darrell I loved the paper clip note, I put a small steel washer on the 3rd string pole on my single coil PP and it helped also.
I put a set of Tonealigners in my PP but will talk with Dave in Phoenix in Jan. _________________ '70 D10 Black fatback Emmons PP, Hilton VP, BJS bars, Boss GE-7 for Dobro effect, Zoom MS50G, Stereo Steel amp, Telonics 15” speaker.

I checked into this pickup and just FYI, Telonics wants $185.00 plus shipping for the 10-string 409PW pick-up.
It BETTER be great _________________ Jb in Ohio

That's what I paid for mine. Like I have told my wife for years, "You get what you pay for"...most of the time anyway. I'm happy with the 409
Also something I forgot to mention, I have heard that when others have changed out pickups on their GFI steels, they have to file down the sides of the new pickups for it to fit in the guitar. Seems GFI makes their pickup holes narrower than most, but when I ordered my Telonics 409, I told them what guitar it was going in, and when I got it, I didn't have to modify or file down anything on it. Not sure if the pickup was modified by Telonics purposely to fit the GFI, or if that is just the normal 409 pickup size. |
