Is there an 8 string lap with normal scale length but super short overall length? Something that would fit in a checked suitcase?

Check with Jerry Knapper 918.520.1048. He has a couple of keyless S8 lapsteels that he built. Great guy to talk with.

I saw an 8-string Harmos at Emerald City Music (Seattle) last summer. Maybe it's still around, you might try calling them.

Here's a link to one that sold at Elderly, they're quite an unusual!
