It's Christmas. Jim P is closed, probably till Monday, I have a gig Sunday night, and something beyond my capacity to fix is wrong with one of my pedals.
My white steel isn't as pretty as my purple one, but it plays and sounds just as good. Normally I use it for woodshedding, but this Sunday I will use it on the gig.
I'd be in big trouble if I didn't have a spare. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

24 Ray? Are you sure that's enough?
Question: how many do we actually need?
Answer: Just one more Honey, I promise. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

I have two trombones for similar reasons - undamaging a slide is a specialist task. And then I have three more...

Well beside the standard f attachment tenor you've got to have a nice peashooter for playing jazz. Then you need a silver one just like it. If you just had a bass trombone you could get more auditions. Then your gonna want Thayer valves on that baby. Ooh and those Shires are nice too.
I believe this is known as G.A.S. (Gear Aquisition Syndrome)

Merry Christmas, Mike.
White steels look good this time of year. |

For a player that gigs regularly, having two pedal steels is just a practical necessity. I always have one permanently set up at home for practice.
I remember those days when I only had one steel. It came home from the gig and sit in its case until the next one. If I wanted to work out a lick or practice I'd think about having to set up everything. So, of course, I'd put it off.
Having two steels is not to the point of being a luxury. It just isn't. Heck, no way does the at-home steel have to be of the same caliber as the "sweetheart" you're gigging with. And we all know there are some inexpensive ones that can be found if you keep looking. |

Yeah, what Mike and Eric said…
When I've been touring it's a necessity to have one in the bus and one on hand for sessions and one-off gigs, rehearsals, etc. But it's great to be able to have one ready to go out the door and one ready to sit down and shed on. I do much better if there's a guitar right in my face nagging me to pick up the bar!
Another facet here is if they're different brands, you can experience the high points of each one alternately. (I understand the opposite point as well, having the same feel and setup on several guitars, but with the various differences and personalities of the guitar brands, it's fun and instructive to be abel to swap back and forth). I just wish I the jack for a whole stable. _________________ Stop by the Steel Store at: www.markvanallen.com

I like the fact that my 2 steels (MSA U-12 millenniums) are Identical, color notwithstanding.
After I got the 2nd one (which I found on E-bay,) I took both to Jim Palenscar and asked him to set them up so identically that I could sit at them blindfolded and not know which one I was playing.
Needless to say, he nailed it. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

I was shopping for presents in a hobby store and came across a half a square foot of carbon fibre board...maybe an eighth inch thick...almost 100 bucks..
Dont know what the tonal properties are but it has been said carbon fibre went up in price... i had no idea how expensive it was.
as for ray montee...sounds like the boys in oregon could go without a backup and ray could start a rental business. |

G.A.S. Don't let it happen to you.
Well, maybe a little...
Ian's first post would've really been funny if he had added that he doesn't play trombone...
Happy Holidays, all... |

Isn't the definition of a gentleman "someone who owns a trombone but doesn't play it"? Or is that a banjo? My kids think it's a steel guitar. |

No Peter... it's an accordion.
Which I do play...(hey, work is work)
And I have 5.
There it is... out in the open. I feel somewhat unburdened. |

It's a good time of year to unburden.
I have a fake Paracho (Mexican classical guitar) in my closet. |

You do not need a reason for another steel guitar. Get as many as you like.
