Comparing both guitars, I've noticed my '71 Emmons P/P has a hotter volume level than my '66 Emmons P/P. I've done my own comparison using the same amp, same volume pedal then just switching from one guitar, to the other. Can this difference be due to the way the pickups are wound, or could the wiring with the copassitors & resisters play a part in it?

Are these double necks and you hear the same differences on each neck? Are you using an Emmons volume pedal? If so, even though you think you are using the volume pedal the same, slight differences in the height of the guitar can make a difference in the volume, I'd turn the amp down and do the same test without the volume pedal.
The number of turns or the resistance of the pickups can make a small difference. The wiring shouldn't make any difference, assuming they both have stock wiring and the tone control is bypassed. Pickup height will make a significant difference though. |

I have stock Emmons single coil pickups on both guitars (E9th Necks). I cheched the height and the '66 pickup was maybe .075 of a centimeter closer than that of the '71's. I sure would like the '66 pickup to be a little hotter.

Nick, I would check the DC resistance with a Ohm meter..I think you will find the 66 somewhere around 14K to 16K..And it sounds like your 71 is going to be quite a bit higher than that..More windings = more DC resistance , which = more output..
It will also effect the sound/tone..Do you notice a difference in the tone? If so which do you prefer..

Jerry,
No doubt about it, the tone on the '66 is much sweeter. I've always had enough volume but I just noticed a difference in outputs when doing a comparison of the 2 guitars side by side. I only wondered if there might be an adjustment to change the pickup's output. Nick |

Nick, its obvious you have become unhappy with the output and tone of your 66 bolton.I think you need to sell it to me and buy one of the newer vanilli sounding steels and try and move past this mentalpause phase of your life. lakeshrk |

Nick, my '67 pickups are 14.83 on the E9th, and 14.85 on the C6th. There is a difference in the output volume verses a pickup with 18K ohms. However just turn your amp up to get the same output. I don't think "more is better" when it comes to pickups. The more ohms a pickup has, the more you have to boost the treble. When you do that, you turn up "white noise" in the amp, or hiss. We really don't use much of the pre-amp gain on our amps because our pickups are so hot. I think somewhere in the past we must have got into a "horsepower war" with our pickups. "My pickups have 15K. Oh yea, mine have 17K. Oh yea, mine have 20K." and so on... |

Hey Nick,
There's not all that much difference
in output when I compare any of my old P/P's.
Mainly just different frequencies that
are a bit more prominent than others.
Sometimes that gives the illusion that
later ones are "hotter".

Well, even if I have to crank up the amp a little. . . .I still like the sound of this old '66. I only notice it when I don't use my Pro-Fex. When I only have the straight Amp by itself. b0b, what about your Sierra's, do you notice a difference in volume levels from one guitar to the other?
