Where did John's ZumSteels go? Were they sold or are they still with the family?
Just curious. |

The last one I saw him play at Dallas 2006 was Dark Blue Mica on the front with woodgrain on the top deck....wonder what happened to that one ? I think thats the guitar he plays on the Timejumpers DVD as well.

As I understand it. Of the last 3 Zums. Darrel Owens has one. Vince Gill has one. And one is still with the family. It's been several years so things may have changed. |

Bruce is mostly retired, but don't count them out. There are discussions of selling to someone who will take them on, and a would not become effective until the successor demonstrated the ability to make a Zum-quality guitar.
As far as I know, Bruce still makes parts, but no longer guitars. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

It is good that John's guitars all went to good homes.
Bruce Zumsteg has asked me to post this -
There are no discussions with anyone about selling ZumSteel, there never have been and probably never will be.
From me -It's funny to see how rumors get started......someone hears something that has been twisted around and then posts it on the steel guitar forum or some other public place, even though they really have no idea what they are talking about.
People could look at the ZumSteel / Stage One / Encore business relationship and assume that maybe I would take over ZumSteel someday, and maybe that would be a somewhat reasonable assumption. It most likely will never happen. I don't think I could do justice to the pro line guitars, I'm just not that much of a perfectionist and what I'm doing now is working very well.
Sorry for this off-topic drift, but Bruce wanted this rumor stopped right now.
Merry Christmas to all who celebrate this holiday. _________________ Doug Earnest

As far as I know, Mike McGee in Everton, MO still has the red one. Bruce had it for a while and I considered buying it; but Mike beat me to it, and I'm glad he did, because he knows what to do with all them darn knee levers!! Last I knew, it had 10 pedals and 11 knees. |

Doug, my bad. A friend of mine had told me about preliminary discussions.
It wasn't "a guy I know knew a guy whose brother said", but apparently it never went anywhere. I'm glad I at least never said "Fred Hoffman said he was gonna buy it".
I apologize for putting cart before horse.
¹not the name of the guy: I don't know anyone with that name. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Just to clarify things.... I started this thread out of curiosity about John's steels. I would have loved to have owned one, but, didn't want to bother the family about selling anything of his. So, I thought maybe I was asleep at the switch if and when they had come up for sale. But, I respect it, if they were sold privately, but, still curious. No malicious intentions or anything was meant by my post. |

A builder the caliber of Bruce could never teach someone everything he knows about building his fine guitars any more than John Hughey could have ever taught anyone to play like him.. It's more than parts and pieces it's the heart and feel that Bruce puts into his guitars.. Having players like Emmons and Hughey play his instruments say's more than any of us could about that.. |
