I was a teenager back in the early to mid 60's when folk music was popular. I listened to a lot of Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, and a nice vocal group Called "The New Christy Minstrels. Bob Dylan was around a lot in that era, but his singing was kind of sour. He was much better at writing songs.
I would guess that Peter, Paul and Mary had the best group. They did sell a lot of records.
That was a fun time to be around, but when I think back on folk music.... I kind of glad that stuff didn't catch on!
If you look back a little further, check out a group called the "Weavers". Real nice vocals. Pete Segar played and sang with them.
I almost forgot the most important group of that era... "The Kingston Trio". Lots of good songs came from that group of guys.

I entirely agree with Joaquin. Judy Collins is the one I was going to mention before I saw his response. Her "I Pity the Poor Immigrant", with Buddy Emmons on steel, is magnificent.

It's not on the LP that Joaquin recommended, by the way.

The other LPs that I would list as my favorites are by Kate Wolf, who died tragically young. She wrote "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", which happens to be the name of the Judy Collins album on which I Pity the Poor Immigrant appears.

There are so many great records in the Folk genre, in all corners from Celtic to Americana to blues. Here are a few favorites of mine that have remained favorites for many years ...

Alan, Sandy Denny wrote "Who Knows Where The Time Goes", but Kate Wolf is also great.

Definitely Sandy Denny; Sneaky Pete played on 'It'll Take A Long Time' and 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' (by Bob Dylan).

That was an entertaining film, and had a lot of in jokes that only someone from that era would recognise. To non-folksies from other eras most of the humour goes over their heads.

"Violets of Dawn" I think they covered the Eric Andersen song. I like him.
