I've been playing a D10 Emmons push-pull for about five years, and pretty much loving it. But I recently bought an all pull guitar to have something lighter and with better pedal and lever action. I've used the all pull guitar at one rehearsal and one gig with the band. But it just wasn't sounding right to me so I took the Emmons to last night's gig.
The first song was a Vince Gill song that let me stretch out a bit. The Emmons sounded wonderful.
Just as the song was ending the singer came over and said:
"This steel sounds so much f#@king better than that other one."

Understandable. I got fired off of a band one time for NOT using my Emmons. I had a Super Pro Sho Bud that sounded every bit as good I think. It just was some mind set the band leader had. The Emmons I had been playing wasn't even a push pull. So I think there is psychology built in. Although, there is some magic about the push pull. Or at least some elegance, or at least with the two I've owned. |

One time I replace a Carter I was playing with a PP, got to the gig early, covered it with a towel until start time. As soon as I hit the first note passage the whole band turned to me a smiled with a thumbs up.
The guitar player who is a gear junkie actually took a step back he was so startled by the sound. _________________ '70 D10 Black fatback Emmons PP, Hilton VP, BJS bars, Boss GE-7 for Dobro effect, Zoom MS50G, Stereo Steel amp, Telonics 15” speaker.

It should be said that the singer making the comment knows nothing about steel guitars. He still calls my PSG a slide guitar despite having been corrected many times. His musical background has been singing in rock and heavy metal bands. He simply heard the difference and commented in his typical crude fashion. _________________ It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. |

Hey Paul, I watched your you tube regarding the compensator on string 1. Good stuff. I never thought about it for years, but just stayed my usual complacent self.
I'm working on a D10 EMCI, still in belief that an all pull guitar is capable of sounding as good as a push pull. After watching your demonstration I started messing around with strings 1 and 2 in the fashion you describe and you are dead on accurate. Compensating string 1 opens up quite a bit of territory.
I think it comes down to how sensitive a persons ears are combined with their playing skill. Simply avoiding out of tune strings in known areas (such as the F#s) is part of my complacency.
Nice techniques you demonstrate. Thanks for a fresh perspective. |

so basically you guys are just saying you don't like Carter guitars. Why didn't you just say you prefer the Emmons sound over the Carter to begin with ? No harm there.
I have played probably a thousand gigs with one of the 3 Carters I have owned, still own 1, not one time did anyone ever say, man you need a new Steel that one sounds horrible. I even brought my Emmons Legrande to several gigs in between, and/or my Sho Bud..nobody cared, nobody noticed, but they did expect me to play on pitch, in tune and the appropriate notes. Do my Steels sound different, yeh, the Emmons had SC's and the Carter has H Buckers. Did it matter , no...
Glad you guys like your PP's ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Really, fired for not playing an Emmons ? Fired ?
And this was a band you actually wanted to play in ?
I guess Lloyd Green or Paul Franklin would have been out of the question as a sub. Man ,they must have been one really great band.
I wonder, if I had put an Emmons Badge on my black Carter would they have let me play in the band ? _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Tony, there are no hostilities implied ok?
I agree with you. I've played more jobs with carter made equipment than anything else.
My point is that I know I was not fired off of a band because of playing sho bud. I'm just saying the band leaders sometimes have a prejudice. But using the sho bud and not the Emmons was what they told me. Obviously there were more factors. And no I did not particularly care to work with them. It was a source of revenue. No rewarding wonderful job.
I have a huge passion for Carter equipment. Always will.
I'm sure no body meant to anger you. If my statements did, I apologize. |

Not at all Bill, just thinking out loud to the band leader ! I just found it goofy that a band leader would say that or do that , to anyone !
RE: The Emmons or Carter thing, or any other brand, I love Emmons Steels to , I just don't happen to own one right now, but it's still early in the day ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Tony it is not about not liking the Carter (I have had 2). It is about the difference between the sound of the PP and a Carter. They are both good but not the same.
The string separation, that in your face presence, it just gets in your head and no other guitar does it for you. THEY ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE, that is OK, but for those that dig it, we are a happy bunch.
Three more NW players now using PP's, they are thrilled with the sound. _________________ '70 D10 Black fatback Emmons PP, Hilton VP, BJS bars, Boss GE-7 for Dobro effect, Zoom MS50G, Stereo Steel amp, Telonics 15” speaker.

years ago I showed up for a gig in Germany, with my nice Washburn banjo and brand new D-10 Excel, band leader looked at me and asked "what is this?" ... I said what do you mean? he said "you are supposed to have an Emmons steel guitar, and Gibson banjo"... so I just looked at him, and didn't say a word... day after the gig we had a music critic write a column in the local newspaper about the gig where he wrote "the whole band sounded like they just got out of garage, and singer can't sing to save his life, the only musicians that sounded and played good were lead guitarist and steel player (me on steel and friend of mine on lead, both hired for that gig and not band members)... lol ... |
