I'm looking for bands like Mohave 3, Calexico, Cowboy Junkies, and Red House Painters. I like the folk/country tinged stuff of these indie bands. Steel guitar isn't necessary but appreciated.
Anything slow and as I call it "Lo-Fi" sounding.I like the Mexican sounding Western movie sound of Calexico but I'm looking for stuff that sounds like their indie trippy stuff more than the Mexican/Western.
Examples of stuff I like:

Thanks for any recommendations.

You might like this record, Country Gazette by World Standard. I bought the CD back around 2000. There is some steel guitar on it, too. It was conceived by mastermind Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Here is the full recording:

Also, the record by Lambchop, Is A Woman, is one of my favorites ever.

Not Indie, but Bruce Springsteen made a very somber and tranquile album with "The Ghost Of Tom Joad". Steel played by Marty Rifkin.

Red House Painters are my favorite band! And the Mojave 3 are one of the reasons I picked up a steel.

Some recommendations:

Sun Kil Moon, especially the first three albums, this is Mark Kozeleks band after red house painters.

Spain: Blue moods of Spain, and she haunts my dreams are really great albums.

Bonnie Prince Billy: most anything is great but the albums I see a darkness, and master and everyone are two favs.

Songs Ohia/Magnolia Electric Company: the whole catalogue is astounding. The album Magnolia Electric co is a good starting point.

Israel Nash is a pretty new artist whose got some great stuff out

The band Idaho has some stuff you might like too.

A bit heaveier on the triply side:

Before they were the Mojave 3 they were Slowdive, super awesome band.
Some albums by The Magnetic Fields have that folky undertones. Listen to the album 69 love songs, it doesn't get better than that.
Japancakes -lots of awesome trippy steel on their albums

Taking that slow red house painters sound in a less folky direction are bands like
Bedhead
Codine
David bazan/Pedro the lion
Carissa's wierd.

You might like the band Hem. Really beautiful well crafted music. I spent years touring and recording with them.
I played a couple concerts with Mojave 3 also. Now that was fun !

Ryan Adams made some great records. I like the Cardinals stuff with Jon Graboff playing steel.

Iron and Wine is pretty nice too.

Ever listened to The Friends of Dean Martinez? Everything after their first two albums falls into the realm you describe. I recommend the "On The Shore" LP.
LISTEN

Check out Maggie Bjorklunds youtube videos for great steel. The Calexico guys collaborated on her first CD, which is one of my favorites. Try "Summer Romance" or "Wasteland".

Xul Solar was my band's project that was a spaghetti western, science fiction soundtrack: LISTEN

I also want to add Richard Buckner's record "Since", which I think is amazing. Steel playing by Eric Heywood.

I did like Friends of Dean Martinez.

Xul Solar had that Western Calexico feel about it with some experimental thrown in at just the right measure.

I've heard Iron & Wine perform with Calexico on a couple of songs. I liked some of the Hem songs I listened to.
