Hi Leo.... Greetings from a Bakersfield native son. I'm 68 and grew up with the music known as the Bakersfield Sound. If I had to pick one person most responsible, I couldn't. There are three that stand out to me though....Bill Woods, Wynn Stewart. and Ralph Mooney. Hag as much said so about Woods years ago. Wynn preceded Buck and Hag and both placed him right at the top. Mooney said Wynn was the best singer he ever played with/for...and that says a lot when we consider Buck , Hag and Waylon in that group. Mooney's Fender licks especially on Wynn's and Buck's records are the best in my opinion. He was an innovator and played with such passion. It's a shame that Wynn and Mooney aren't in the CMHOF. I don't mean to diminish the major contributions of all the others...and you probably more than anyone knows who they are. That's my two cents worth. I enjoy all your posts on this Forum. Thanks.

My next Big Step is to work this out with our late friend Mr.Gene Autry's widow Jackie with their Museum that we once had with our late dear friend Mr.Cliffie Stone that the Academy Of Country Music power heads turned down & that in respect to my other name dropping late Business friend Mr.Dick Clark had nothing to do with this. I know! My Palm Springs,California connection is on the Rockie of waiting, but, some feed back has already took place and hit me up. Being in the shadows of working with all these " Icon Super Star " folks and so many others over the years in one way are another,I have the right to stand up for us all out here in Southern California and this Nation of the USA. Thanks for the Jelly Beans Mr.Ronald and I don't mean McDonalds.Uncle Leo J Eiffert Jr. the you should have it down by now that I am real in this deal. God,He Ain't Cheap and he's doing his job for me. Winking

Olli:

By far the best Wynn Stewart is the 10 cd set put out out by Bear Records in Germany. Name of the set is "Wishful Thinking" and it covers all of Wynns' music including his Challenge cuts.

Ditto what Graham said.

Also, along with what Gary Hoetker said about the bakersfield sound, I would also include Ken Nelson (Capital Records producer) and Skeets McDonald.

Skeets McDonald:
"What a Fool I've Been"

"Same Old Town"

This thread has revitalized my interest in this music. I spent so much time listening to it a few years ago and then put it away. Time to pull it all out again. Especially Wynn and Skeets. Thanks!

Joachim; Graham will probably be able to answer your question, but to the best of my knowledge, Clarence White never did any sessions for Wynn Stewart. His session work was mainly with artists associated with the emerging country-rock and progressive bluegrass genres.

Thanks Chris! That was very interesting reading.
Glenn, the article mentions an album with Clarence playing behind Wynn Stewart:
"Something Pretty".

Chris, thanks for the link on Clarence White. Joachim, I stand corrected - Clarence did do a session with Wynn Stewart for the Something Pretty album. Smile The whole album appears on disc 4 of the 10-disc box set from Bear Family. When I posted my last remarks I didn't have my copy of that box set handy in order to check the session details for that album.

BTW: After listening to the rest of the cuts from that album, I don't think that Clarence played on any other cuts (again, as I post this, I don't have the box set handy to verify my hunch).

For those with the box set, the out of print Something Pretty tracks (on disc 4) are:
Something Pretty, Built-In Love, She Didn't Color Daddy, One More Memory, If Tomorrow Could Be Yesterday, Good Old Fashioned Love, An Arm's Length From You, Your Steppin' Stone, This Cold War (with You), Why Didn't I Write That Song?, and Man, Man Mr. Sandman.

Keep on pickin'
Glenn

Does anyone know a Wynn Stewart track called 'Man, Man Mr Sandman'? I can't find any reference to it although I recall it being on a Capitol compilation cassette I once had.

I'd love to hear it again! I remember some great playing from James Burton and Ralph Mooney - or many I dreamed the whole thing?

Roger, you aren't dreaming the whole thing. "Man, Man Mr. Sandman" is the last track on Wynn's 1968 album, Something Pretty. Something Pretty (vinyl) is out of print and has never been re-released in any other format. Luckily, all the tracks are available on the Wynn Stewart Box-set:
http://www.amazon.com/Wishful-Thinking-Wynn-Stewart/dp/B00004TD14

Something Pretty is a great album, and if you like Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, you'll love this album. Regarding Wynn's band (The Tourists), on this album some of the musicians are James Burton and Ralph Mooney (of course); Peaches Price (Wynn's longtime drummer), Bobby Austin on bass, and last but not least the legendary Clarence White on guitar. In fact, it's Clarence playing on "Man, Man Mr. Sandman".

The tracks, in the order that they appear, on this album are "Something Pretty", "Built-In Love", "She Didn't Color Daddy", "One More Memory", "If Tomorrow Could Be Yesterday", "Good Old Fashioned Love", "An Arm's Length From You", "Your Stepping Stone", "This Cold War With You", "Why Didn't I Write That Song?", and "Man, Man, Mister Sandman".

Roger, check your PM

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn

Thank you, Glenn (check your pm).

So - Clarence White, eh? It was forty-something years ago when I last heard that track. I'd like to think I would make the same mistake today!

Anyway, no wonder it was so good.
