I know this has been covered before in some of the "come-backs" from previous posts but their are differing types and substances in the make-up of Stainless Steel Bars.

I just made up a 15/16" stainless bar from what I believed to be type 316 but was disappointed to find out there is a miniscule amount of dirt or grey "stuff" coming from it even though I buffed it to a mirror finish. I've been using Jag-Wire strings so I know "stuff" hasn't been coming from them. The tone is slightly better than my other homemade bar which is 3/4" diam. which was made exactly the same way with supposing to be 316.

Which for sure is the best all round buffable mirror like finished stainless material ?

I have found the same problem with 300 series stainless (austenitic)... I even sent one to be cryogenically treated ... that helped abit.

400 series (martensitic) stainless can be heat treated (hardened) if you want a real "tough" bar and it polishes up just fine ...

You can then go for "super tough" by having it cryo-ed after heat treating (like the Pearse bars)

Here is a nice review on stainless steels and their properties ...
