| Outside of Jackson and ShowPro, which appear to have deep ties back to Shobud, which steels have something more like the vintage Shobud tone? |

Something with a wood neck, 24" scale, laq finish, and single coil p/u's ought to get you in the ballpark.
Desert Rose?
And yes, I know that some Buds have metal necks...my SuperPro does. |

Good luck.. I have tried getting the Sho Bud sound from other brands, and it doesn't usually pan out..
A Jackson will give you exactly what you are looking for, but they don't come cheap.
I had a Desert rose, and while it was a nice guitar, all wood, etc, it had a decidedly "modern" sound..
It would have been closer with a Truetone wound to Bud specs...
The late John Fabian once told me his guitars had a very "Bud like" sound... I agree. Not exactly of course, but after 2 Carters I must say, its as close as I have gotten.. They are quite rare, but I bet if you could find a wood neck, lacquer body Carter with a Truetone you would be close... Best bet?.. Finding a Sho Bud with upgraded "modern" mechanics....bob

| To me, the Fulawka has a sound that's very similar to the old 'Buds. Though I've been know to buy just about anything (to keep, not to "flip") it's the only guitar presently on my wish list. |

| The Shobud tone is an amalgam of many things. It's not just the pickup! It's materials, changer axle size, and on and on. James and I, and earlier on Coop and I, have discussed this for hours on end. The sum of the parts,,,,,,,,, |

I agree, John. That's why I asked if anyone has had any success.
I myself have two Sho-Bud Crossovers, which sound very different from each other, and a Fender/Sho-Bud hybrid, which uses a combination of Sho-Bud mechanisms, Fender tuners, and a pickup which seems to be derived from neither.
It would be nice to have a pedal steel with the tone of a Fender Stringmaster. |

Alan,
One of the most discussed topics between me and James, Coop and Ricky, is the effect of castings versus machining from blocks of aircraft aluminum. There seems to be a difference to me, The castings seem to sound better. In my opinion only.

Now THAT might have a lot to do with how the pickup is wound! And might have something to do do with why Shobud pups were tapped. |

Casting V machined parts....The better sounding bells are cast. I know,I know, we don't play bells but from what I've gleaned from all discussions,castings have better tonal quality.

Yes I had an old mica MSA with a Bud coil tap PU out of a 6139... meh.. It sounded like a mica/plywood MSA, kind of dull, and with limited sustain, but with some of the Bud glassiness there as well to sweeten the sound.. Sounded like an MSA with a Bud pickup I suppose. Some of the plywood MSA steels just did not sound good , mine did not.
Same pickup in a maple MSA, would have had a much more pronounced "bud vibe" I would think.

I think the two videos of David Hartley playing a sho bud pro 1 sum it up pretty well. They just have a different tone than his others on the Rains and Jistice guitars.

I owned one.. It sounded good, but not like a Bud. I have played others... Its a good guitar, but has a "modern" sound.... whatever that is... ymmv... bob

The sound of my 1974 Pro 2 with barrels behind 2 hole pullers, round front, original pickups, wood neck. Also can be described as fat, ass whooping honky tonk tone as compared to thin whiny sophisticated tone. |

Tom Killen has one of the best sounding Sho-Buds that I have ever heard.
I read some old posts on here where they said he has spent some lots of time with Lloyd. Maybe some of Lloyd's tone rubbed off on him.
Tom plays with Vince Moreno on Broadway sometimes on the weekends when Tommy is playing the opry. |

Thanks Tom. It looks nice on the page but I can't hear it down south here in California. BTW I'm not sure how much longer this year I can continue swimming in my unheated outdoor pool. |

Had a few minutes to audition some youtube clips on my cell.
Check out Bob Adams plays 'A fool such as I' on youtube. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to copy and paste a link on this phone.
That captures a lot of what I hear in shobud...deep rich tones with a smooth top, almost like blowing across the top of a wine bottle.
There were some bad examples out there too...players trying to make their buds sound like a screech machine...ick...Adams did a great job on this. |
