Two of my favorite clips. Tom made it looks so easy, didn't he?

I was playing at Rodeo Exchnge and during our break I walked across the street to see who was at Pearls. Tom was playing this thing that looked like à 2 x 4 bult in his back yard from old scrap lumber but man he sounded great. I was deeply impressed by his style and ability. One thing I learned that night was that it's all in the hands because it couldn't have been due to the looks.

David Wright sure knows a great steel player when he hears one. Tom Morrell definitely fits the bill. Thanks David for posting the links.

I have a few other videos of Tom that I never put on YouTube, and they are very good. It's a nice band, with Leon and Bobby Boatwright, Craig Chambers, etc., but Tom was on a whole 'nuther level from them, maybe two.

The late Bill Lawrence told me once, that only two people played well, drunk. "Myself, and Tommy Morrell." I miss 'em both.

David thanks for this post...I was blessed to play some jobs with Tom in late 70's as I was aspiring to be a singer. I met Tom through steel players Billy Braddy and Jerry Cunningham who kind of alternating with our group at the time. Neither could make a trip out to West Texas for some company Christmas parties, so Tom went and I instantly knew he was special.. Years later a light came on for me... Tom was sharing a room with me at the first TSGA show when he was featured (in the lounge of the hotel) with his A team swing band. I looked up and all the little cocktail tables had the big name Nashville players, each with tape recorders, etc. I thought to myself, Morrell really is fantastic. As time went on, and as I look back, Tom should have been a featured solo act on the Tonight Show..the guy had total command of the instrument.. He was great!

I too miss Tom. After I discovered him in the mid 90's I was telling Jeff Newman about him. Jeff did not know about him at that time. I was going to Dallas to the jamboree and found out that Buddy was not going to be there that year. I told Jeff that Buddy would be missed but Tommy would be there and that was enough. Jeff did not understand till after the show was over.
A funny story, Bobby Koefer said he asked Tom one time if he used a tuner. Tom's reply was "no, that is what ears are for".
A true genius.
