Here is a nice article by Tuck Andress, one of the best Jazz guitarist around. This pretty much fits steel players too who say you have to have this guitar or that guitar to sound good.

TFS, Darvin. Great story or one could even say fable since there is much to be learned there.

Some fine words of wisdom there.
I had the fortune of jamming countless times with Nokie Edwards and I learned many of those same lessons from him. It always amazed me how he could sit in on someone else's guitar and amp, not change any settings and sound like Nokie.

Btw, I've read that Leon Russel took lessons from James Burton. Tuck and Patti played a gig a few years ago at a music club in my area. Now I regret that I didn't go there to listen.

Tuck mentioned in his article a player in Tulsa, the incomparable Tommy Crook. Having seen and talked to Tommy, I can testify, that boy can get after it. With his Gibson Hollow Body Guitar strung up with extra heavy E&A Bass strings on the bottom, he was virtually a One Man Band. Playing The Bass Line while playing chords, it really sounded like there was a Bass Player hidden somewhere on the stage. I tried playing his guitar, but NO CIGAR, I just Play Like I Play, and I'm very happy that the band I'm in, keeps me busy every weekend pickin' Steel and Tele.

I was raised in the Tulsa area and never knew Tuck Andress was from there. I heard of Tommy Crook a lot after I started trying to learn the guitar.

I've been lucky to see Tuck & Patti a few times going way back to their first 2 records, but I also got to see Tuck solo once, and that was quite a treat. Do you all have his solo recording, Reckless Precision?

Apparently Chet Atkins was not man enough to record "Louie Louie" but Tuck is fearless in this regard.

So, you're expecting us to believe that everyone with an Emmons doesn't sound like Buddy? And everyone with a Gretsch doesn't sound like Chet???

That borders on heresy around here! Laughing

Even the most heretical around here are unlikely to be able to say "just stop spending money to try to sound better" without adding a bit of the "hypocrite" to the "heretic" part.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tuck backstage after listening to his work with Patti Cathcart on recordings.I had few questions about his Gibson and he just handed me his guitar! The action was quite high and the first string was a 13. As anyone who has seen and heard him play I had to ask...why are you not crippled?

I worked a gig recently where Tuck and Patti were the headliners.

All's I can say is they are fabulous.

Tuck plays from another dimension and Patti brings him down to Earth.

Just awesome.
