The song was written by Jimmy Peppers (George Jones is listed as co-writer but it was written by Peppers).

Jimmy Peppers told me the story behind the song. He said it was in the "no show" days and he was in George's hotel room in Nashville. He was supposed to appear on the Opry that night. Peppers said he told Jones that he needed to get ready as he was to appear on the Opry tonight. He said George responded that he wasn't going and said "Peppers, tonight I just don't give a damn". Peppers took that line and wrote the song.

The song was in an album but was never released as a single. That was early 70's and he said the record label was afraid it wouldn't get air play because it had "damn" in it. Today, it wouldn't matter.
