Seems like someone mentioned a program for removing the lead instrument from a track a while back? Anyone know where or what program??? |

I have used Audacity - a basic, free recording program with some success. You split the stereo tracks into two tracks. Sometimes the lead is almost all on one, so just deleting the one track and playing the other as a mono track (you change what type it is) works. There are other tricks I've forgotten, but you could google it. It is not perfect, but good enough for a basic practice track.
If someone has better methods, I'd sure be interested. _________________ Bringing steel guitar to the bukid of Negros Oriental! |

Riffstation
You can get a free trial copy here:

Watch the video

I use it all the time- watch the video, it is a powerful program for anybody wanting a quick and easy tool for dissecting songs to hear specific parts.
It will let you remove a part to 'play with the band' too- great for sing along/play along track generation. |

Jay, does Riff Station really do a good job of removing steel guitar from a song (thus making a backing track?). Or do results vary depending on the mix? A lot of steel is played interlaced with vocals, so you would want to keep the vocals but lose the steel, vs their sample in the video where it was mostly bass and drum behind the guitar - much easier, I think. _________________ Bringing steel guitar to the bukid of Negros Oriental! |

Jay,
That is one of the songs from the album I've been working on, and you got it much cleaner than I could with Audacity and my tricks.
I did not download the sample program because I am traveling at the moment, and internet access is limited and not sure I would get much use out of the sample before the time expired on it (I assume it is time-limited). Once I'm settled I will try the program, and probably purchase it.
Thanks! _________________ Bringing steel guitar to the bukid of Negros Oriental! |

Jay, I finally got around to downloading the trial of Riffstation - very simple and good results. One question - the sample you sent me was a .wav file. The trial will only save files as .rs (riffstation format. Does the paid version save them in other formats? Or did you use a trick to get that into a .wav format? _________________ Bringing steel guitar to the bukid of Negros Oriental! |

I believe the .rs format is the info Riffstation is using to alter the file. It's the 'session' file.
If you select Save Audio, it should save it in the files native format.
If you don't have that ability, it is probably in the test drive mode.
I do and have saved to wav and mp3 formats with no problems
You may have to buy it to get that feature.

Thanks, Jay. That's what I suspected, but I could not find anything in the documentation that spelled it out. I do not have an option to "save file" in the trial version, only to "save session", which is the .rs format. _________________ Bringing steel guitar to the bukid of Negros Oriental! |

Agreed
You really can't go wrong with this program
If you will be needing to carve out sections to learn or make jam along tracks, nothing beats this program.
The $$$ you have to pay is well worth it, IMHO
