I'd like to introduce myself...

Have joined to learn non-pedal steel. 54 yrs old.

Play some jazz guitar...been working on chord melody which got me into rudiments of arranging and fingerstyle...to connect the chords...and reharmonization to explore different sounds...

This showed me that fingerstyle technique is not impossible. Thought I might as well learn to play some steel.

Lucky to have a '54 Fender Dual Professional...sounds rich and fine through a small tube amp or my Roland Jazz Chorus...almost organ-like in its richness and tone.

Musically, I like jazz esp. bebop and others (Duke, Diz and Bird), the Great American Songbook, "new" old style country (Br5-49, Chris Scruggs), traditional country (Hank W.), honky tonk, western swing, latin and bossa nova)...pretty much anything except Andrew Lloyd Webber, or Mrs. Miller.

Doug Beaumier's playing knocks me out...lyrical and beautifully phrased...Joe Wright is all energy and mastery...Buddy Emmons, of course...and then there is some guy named Byrd who is supposed to be pretty good....(OK...just funnin'...I'm thinking of working with Doug B's songbook, some lessons with Doug B. and the Jerry Byrd big book)

The next yr. I think will be C6, 8-string...."wax on...wax off...wax on...wax off"

Welcome to the forum, Peter. Thank you for mentioning me in your open post. Much appreciated. You'll find a wealth of information here about tunings, technique, and "straight steel" guitar. Enjoy
