Looking for the Unicorn of Fender 400 parts, a pan cover. I believe that this is a late 60's early 70's version.

The steel looks identical to this one http://squareone-learning.com/gutsimages/Fender400number2.jpg

If you have a lead, please let me know.

Thanks
Jay

You should also keep you eyes open for a Fender Stringmaster tuner pan which is the exact same part but possibly slightly more likely to come up.

Do you mean the "ashtray" flip up dust cover for the changers or the pan on the keyhead side that holds the tuners?

Yeah, the "ashtray" on the changers. You have one?

Thanks!

Oops! Please disregard what i said about the Stringmasters - whe I read "pan" I assumed you meant the tuner pan.

too bad...I have one of those! Tuner pan I mean. The old long scale pedal 400s/1000s may have the same "ashtray" as Stringmasters had.

bridge cover fro Fender--yuck. If you've ever tried one to play you might find it's not very helpful.

I had a mute and a cover on my 800 and took it off 40 years ago and never looked back. The cover just keeps your hand away from the strings and makes it impossible to palm block.

Mine's for a 10 string version (too wide for your 400) but if you want to just try it to get the feel of it you can borrow it. I think the earlier Fenders with the fixed bar bridge had much smaller covers that clipped on the to ends of the bridge. Lower and and easier to play with in place. (I had one of those, too) The cover you show is a big hunkin' stamping that had 2 mounting screws and completely cover the changer "knuckles" and swiveling mute pad with lever which stuck out the back.

Oh,sorry I wasn't paying attention. You have a newer short scale. That link I sent was for a Stringmaster or earlier 400.

Yeah, I want the ash-tray more to have a complete steel as opposed to re-mounting it. Basically just want to have all the pieces.

Not to hijack the thread. . . BUT, since we're on the subject. . . does anyone else out there agree with me that the Fender 400s, 800s etc were the easiest steel in the world to put strings on. I thought it was genius to thread the string through the changer instead of fumbling in a dark club trying to hook the string on a small peg. I also think some form of "captive" tuning keys like the Fender tuning pan offered, should be a no-brainer on any steel. Other than Fender, it almost seems like the people who design steel guitars never played one.

Anybody with me?

Sincerely,
Craig Baker 706-485-8792
