Just got my first slide guitar. I hear that Carter is a good brand and got it for a deal from my uncle. He doesn't play anymore and sold me the instrument for only $1600.
I really want to play like Sydney cashdollar. Any tips from pros or other beginners on where to start? Also, what should I buy? I have a copper slide and I usually like to use nylon picks for my acoustic. Will that be ok to start? Help!?

If you want to play like Cindy, a steel with pedals is kinda silly. It's like buying one of those snazzy Kitchen Aid mini-Hobart mixers with all the attachments in order to beat eggs.
Cindy plays without pedals, so you COULD do what you want.
The Starter gets a lot of flak here because it has several shortcomings mechanically (the worst being the lever stops).
You paid a fair price for it, and you could use it for the purposes intended. You could also use it to play classic pedal steel, should you choose to learn that part of it.

We'll the price, the reference to slide guitar, copper slide and calling Cindy Sydney had me thinking something wasn't quite right. That aside, welcome to the exciting and overwhelming world of steel guitar. There are many well qualified people here on the forum with good advice to help you along so have fun.

Different people have different ways of learning, but Cindy has a very respectable two-course DVD set on how to play like - Cindy Cashdollar.

I would never, ever NOT want to have the physical DVD's in my hands, down load-only style. Computers still crash, munch things and wear out. |

And you can retune/restring the Starter to her tuning easily enough.

You can, but then the pedals won't do what you expect them to. You would have to change the copedant, and on a Carter Farter that's difficult if not impossible.
$600 is about what the Starters originally sold for. In my opinion, you could have done a lot better, especially if what you really wanted was non-pedal. |
