Guys, I have a great respect for luthiers and pedal steel builders (steel and wood craftsmen), but I found this vid on making ancient Irish harps.
(I have built only a lap steel and electric mandolin sofar. I will post about this later.)
What is interesting is that a living tree is being chopped for this harp and after some rough adzing, buried in bogs for 4 months to absorb minerals etc, and then dried.
Other old timbers of at least 3 000 years are also being used.
This is quite fascinating, I did not know this kind of luthiers exist.

Enjoy this different culture.

Very interesting. I've copied it onto my hard disk.
I'm planning on building a lyre, which has a similar structure, the main difference being that the strings on a harp are attached at right angles to the soundboard, whereas on a lyre they pass over a long bridge, similar to a hammer dulcimer (to which they are both related.) |

Thanks Alan, I hope you found something to help you.
It gave me insight into something I knew nothing about.
You are so versatile, I am sure you can build anything.
When are you going to build that old pedal steel?

In the fullness of time.
Actually, it's getting close to the top of the list. I'm almost finished the projects I'm working on. I just have to record some more mediaeval music before the winter comes on and my fingers become too cold. |
