I finally took the plunge and bought an almost new GFI D-10 off eBay from a nice gentleman who included a bunch of DVDs along with. The first one I watched got me started on some simple stuff and I've been jamming along with simple progressions for a few days now. I was thinking it would take months to get the skills and confidence to play a gig on it, but I'd probably take it with me tonight if I had a gig to play.
I don't know what I was so scared of. It was pretty easy to make the transition since I learned from square one, starting with the banjo to learn 3 finger picking, then dobro to learn the slide, then the six string lap, then adding the volume pedal, then the eight string and then all the variations of tunings, etc. So it was really just a matter of adding a few string benders and learning another new tuning. Not that difficult.
I guess once you go pedals you probably don't go back. I'll probably never bring a Stringmaster to a gig again now that I have this bad boy. |

Good for you! Sounds like you have had a good progression of learning. Just remember, you'll never learn it all, but you will learn something new almost every day. _________________ Amateur Radio Operator NA4IT (Extra)

I may, in fact, be nuts. However, I am screwed onto the right bolt... Jesus! |

Welcome to the obsession.
Some people adapt well to these things, some struggle.
They may be frustrating, but worth it. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

As obsessions go this is a goodun. I thought I would get frustrated and throw in the water like I did with my golf clubs. But it's going so smooth, I can't wait to get into a jam. The tone is so addicting and although I haven't messed with the C6 pedals much yet, I can use it without pedals for now on any Western Swing stuff. I'm pretty hooked I guess. Back to it. I've been playing along with the Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo. A lot of simple chord changes and straight forward stuff. |

Thanks Mark! I'm over on the other side of the state in Eureka Springs. It's a tourist destination with a lot of small music venues. I play a lot of instruments with a lot of different groups for very small money. One of those groups were giving me a lot of pressure to step up to a pedal steel so we could sound more Country. I love all the different instruments and usually have an easy time picking up a new one. I was really stressing about this one but it turns out it's easier than I thought and I'm having tons of fun with it. I just had to tell someone. |

Ha ha! Okay! I still believe it's the most difficult instrument there is to learn. But it's easier to grow into it like I did rather than just take it up cold. I couldn't imagine just taking this up with no previous experience with guitar or something. And yes, I still think everyone that can play it ARE geniuses. I don't hang out with idiots. |
