I have lowered and raised the E9 pickup due to what I thought was noise. This is on the treble side. Curious does anybody know the factory setting height ? Or is there such a thing? What's the criteria for too high or too low? How do you know when it is pickup changing time? Sorry but just returning to steel playing. Can you use the C 6 pickup height as a go by? I am assuming the treble side be relative. What do you Experts say? This is the later year Sho Bud with smaller pedals and smaller knee levers. Late seventies?

The general rule-of-thumb on pickup height is the thickness of two quarters. Check it and see.
Is it a D10?
If so, is the thin tone coming from both pickups, or just the E9 neck?
This would rule out weather the E9 pickup has suffered an internal short (causing it to sound very treble-ee), or something else in the chain that is affecting both pickups.
Run a cord directly from the steel to an amp to rule out the v-ped or effects.
Try a different amp to rule out the amp.
Try a different cord.
