This is a clinic on how to play beautiful Hawaiian guitar. It's Dick McIntire's band, and I know he played steel, but I think he often had other steelers in his band. Also Dorothy Lamour just kills it. An amazing overall performance, as are the rest of the tunes from those sessions.

Bobby Black, Ray Montee, or Earnest Bovine may have a clue.

I can’t get over the comments about how they can’t figure out what genre it is.

I am of the opinion that for a couple of decades, all the actresses in Hollywood went to the exact same voice teacher - his specialty was force-feeding that exact-same vibrato regardless of the tempo or content of the song. But I have a "thing" about vibrato, I know.

I assume the steel guitarist is Dick McIntire since the band bears his name... Winking It sure sounds like him with that wide, sweet vibrato and fat tone. Here's more ----> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxy5YzskHIo

In Jerrys book he states that he loved Dicks playing and sound and if there hadn't been a "Dick McIntire" there wouldn't have been a "Jerry Byrd" !!! olde geeze - AKA - Eddie "C"

Very true, Eddie. Jerry loved Dick's playing. Jerry's recording of "Hilo March" is almost a note for note tribute to Dick's version, recorded about a dozen years earlier. You can hear both versions, back to back Here ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f0WbGA1d2Y

She worked with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope a lot, and Bing was a great lover of the Hawaiian Guitar. Does anyone know if Bob Hope ever recorded with a steel?

Thanks Doug & Eddie! I didn't know Dick McIntire was such a master, or how much Jerry Byrd was influenced by him. I can hear why.

It's also hard to believe that the Hawaiians pretty much abandoned the steel, the instrument that defined their music.

Hi Joe , I think you will find that the Hawaiian steel guitar is getting more popular in Hawaii !! There seems to be an upswing in steel music and players and there are many real good Hawaiian steel players active in Hawaii !! Hopefully this will continue to build !! olde geeze - AKA Eddie "C"
