I haven't tried this yet, but learned about it from an email blast from Premier Guitar:

It's like Netflix for stompboxes, you can try as many pedals, one at a time, as you like for $35/month, no late fees, free shipping, cool! Or 3 at a time for $60/month.
I can finally sample some Leslie simulators through my own rig in the comfort of my home studio.
I'll post info after I've tried this out and let you know if there are any gotcha's. There's already some red flags in their Terms and Conditions, pricing can vary dependent on several things, this may be the achilles heel of the deal.

Hi John,
I read the initial post, I was just waiting to see how it worked for you once you had actually tried things out. I'll keep watching for updates although I'm not a huge effects person, could still be valuable when effects are needed.

It's not a service for everyone, but if you need a new sound and there's no big box music store near you, it's worth considering. My contact explained their business model when I moaned that the price seemed a little too high to me, and he's interested in seeing what happens now that I've hipped you forumites to their services. The first month is only $1, too, according to a link on their site.
In my situation, I'd spring for the Pro membership in order to get 3 pedals per shipment, so I could try the Strymon Lex and EHX B9 pedals together, maybe add a Pog2 to compare to the B9 for the organ tone. So for $60, I could try a desirable combo of pedals at home, not have to schlep my steel to some retail store and endure 18-year old shredders or drummers while I try out effects. I could try as many pedals in that month as I could try and return. Then cancel. Sweet!
Be nice if they'd add steel guitar amps and rack gear to this service!

| I really dig this kind of service. There aren't a lot of good stores near me, especially for pedals, and it makes it very hard for me to try anything out. I don't mind dropping $50 on an pedal I've never tried based on youtube videos, but spending more than $100 on something I've never played through my amp scares me. This is definitely a service I'll be trying out in a month or so, once I get my new amp. It'll be a great way to try a couple of different overdrives. |

Huh? This is insanely brilliant - for THEM. Not necessarily a safe place for anyone other than millionaires. Can you imagine, sitting in front of your favorite amp, which sounds really good, with your own favorite guitar, which sounds really good, listening to some little doohickie you've been playing through every day for the last 28 days (because you wanted to "get your money's worth") whir, whir, whir, howl-howl-howl "AAARGH I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT!" It's already right here.... They're going to sell half of what they send out!

YOU don't get to specify what you get, in what order - THEY do. And, the next available item - not, like, three different delays in a row. You think they're not thinking about sending things in a pattern to make themselves money? Even if you go for the $60-per-month "pro" 3-pedals at a time deal - they're not going to send you three compressors at a time, because you'd only buy one. They're not stupid. And if (when...) you buy one, and the next one they send is even better* - are they going to buy the old one back?  B.F. Skinner meets the Marquis de Sade! God, if I had just been evil enough to invent stuff like this, I'd be snorting cocaine out of movie starlet's bellybuttons on my yacht in the Mediterrean right now.
Gee, I wonder if their "sale" prices are rockbottom competitive? "But... it's already here, I don't have to pay shipping!" (Never mind that everybody's got "free shipping" coupon days and free shipping over $25 or $40 - except Sweetwater). I wonder who's backing this stuff - for sure, if it starts to blow up to 10,000 subscribers or something Dunlop and EH and Ibanez will smell the blood in the water and double down. This is like, phantasmagorical, the "Rent-a-Center" model writ large, although obviously people who buy little boxes to make their squeaky bits be extra-special are judged to have a LOT more disposable income than somebody who thinks the ONLY way they'll ever get the lowest-grade big-screen TV is by paying 60% interest on a lease-to-own program.
*(and it WILL be better! The grass really IS greener, because that's how our minds work. This thing really is clever, one of the finest programs to exploit the flaws in the human O.S. I've ever seen. Wow.)
Process this carefully -
1. What is the wishlist?
Items that you select to rent are placed into your Wishlist. You may add items or adjust the Wishlist at anytime. Click the "My Wishlist" link to review requested items. We determine which items to send you based on the items in your wishlist and the priority in which you have listed them. We endeavor to ship to you the items listed highest in your wishlist; however when availability is limited, we may ship you items lower on your wishlist.
2. How many pedals can I put in my wishlist?
As many as you want, but we ask that you have at least ten pedals in your wishlist at all times for our standard subscription. For the 3-Pedal Pro subscription, you should have a minimum of fifteen pedals (Five groups of Three).
3. How do I sort my wishlist?
Your wishlist items will sort by default based on date-added and cannot be changed. However, you can use the comment field next to each item to indicate a particular preference or assign priority. We will do our absolute best to accommodate any preferences that have been indicated, subject to availability.
4. How do you choose what to ship?
We reserve the right to process orders and otherwise allocate and ship items among our members in any manner that we, in our sole and absolute discretion, determine. As a result of the operational practices described in this section, we may not always send you the top choices from your wishlist or ship out your next item on the same day that we receive one from you. Our goal is to ship you the items listed highest in your wishlist. In certain instances, your next available item will not ship until at least one business day following our receipt of your returned item. Adjustments made to your wishlist may not immediately impact your next shipment. In certain instances you may have adjusted your wishlist before you have received a shipment message when in fact a shipment was already processed. The adjustments will, however, impact subsequent shipments.
Pro 3-pedal shipments are limited to once per month. Additional shipments in a month are $25. Additional deposit required (via credit card authorization) on Pedal Genie Pro subscriptions.
Them ain't tulips yer tiptoeing through, soldier. List fifteen pedals because YOU want to compare a Lex, a B9 and a Pog? Them ain't even cowpies, soldier, them's LANDMINES. |

I like David's skepticism! The idea of paying a "subscription fee" every month sounds strangely like the current cable-TV debacle, in that you wind up paying for something you don't want to get something you do.
