I have recently got hold of a Blonde, birds-maple, Sho-Bud, 'The Professional-lll Custom'. On the label inside it says Model no. 6164, Serial no. 1084, inspected by SJ.
Can anyone tell me what year this was made?

Robert,
This Guitar Serial #1084 is a model 6143 built 4/22/1971. I am pretty sure it was built by Paul Franklin. It was shipped 4/30/71 to Paul Dunkelberger, No address!
That is all the information I have.

Paul Franklin Sr. didn't start working with Sho~bud until 1972. Robert by your descriptions and what you are reading and saying what a label says and what not....sounds like something is wrong with the reality of what you have. You show me and Gene some pictures top to bottom and we can tell you exactly what it is.

Ricky,
The production card has the name Paul in the Built By space and I just took it to be Paul Sr. so I could very well be wrong.

Gene, I think what Ricky meant was that the label on the cabinet has one model number and the serial number records show another model number, I suspect that the guitar may have a wrong endplate...

Yes Lane understands what I mean. Yes by the very non-explanation and non pictures of the shobud in question; some things aren't adding up.

Thanks for the response guys - here are some photos - the serial stamped on the body is the same as the serial number on the label, this might not be clear in the photo.

If you would give the full serial number Gene could give you the build date. A guess is 76-77 Pro III Custom.

The serial number on the label looks like five digits, not clear enough to read in the pic, maybe 12348?, which would make sense for a guitar that is clearly from the late 70s -->

Hey Guy's,
Serial Numbers are very important to determining these dates. Serial # 10849 is a 6164 "Natural" Built by S.J. (Shot Jackson?)7/6/76, Inspected by Yasu. Kameya and shipped to Gretsch Inventory 7/15/76.
Another date on the card is
9/5/79-(Baldwin Piano England)?

When I took over the production of Sho~Bud in October 1979 we never put labels like the one on this guitar. The only lable was a patent label.
