Hi, I need a new tone bar. I know what size and shape I want but I've never used anything other then a standard steel crome bar. I've never experimented with the other kinds of bars (glass, plastic etc.). I play Hawaiian music mostly and I'm open to sugestions and opinions. Thanks, Don |

Do like most of us and have a collection! How do you think those companies stay in business, anyway? If every steeler only had one tone bar they'd go under! _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

What size and shape do you want? That might help narrow down your options. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

I'd recommend either a BJS John Hughey model or a Zirconia bar. |

I would look at a John Pierce, a Brozophonic or a Jerry Byrd bar. All are 3/4 round by about 3 inches long, and 4.5 - 5 oz.
For Hawaiian I would stay away from a Pedal steel sized bar, which are longer for 10 or more strings, larger diameter and heavier.

I agree with Mr. Clinesmith about the Pearse bars. The Steel Guitar Forum Store (poke on Accessories on the top of this page) carries some good ones. The one I use is: http://www.steelguitarshopper.com/JP-B2/ which I find to be a great size for 6 and 8 string, Hawaiian, old Country, and Western Swing.
I started with Dunlop bars so I could try out different sizes to see what worked for me. The Pearse sounds and feels better (in my opinion). Tribotone (currently not available?) and BJS bars are another great step up from there once you're sure of what you want. I don't know what they do with the BJS bars, but they sure do sound good. _________________ "The Masher of Touch and Tone"
