So, I've noticed that due to the length of the key head, strings 5 and 6 break over the nut at a much shallower angle than the other strings. I could be totally imagining this, but this seems to give those strings a slightly spongier feel and sound. Has anybody ever used something like the string tree you see on Fender guitars to give those strings more downward tension onto the nut? I'm probably over thinking something that doesn't matter, but just wondering.
Thanks,

Slightly spongier or more expressive? They're right at the heart of the tuning. If they were a problem I'm sure someone would have tackled it. I suppose the keyless tuner is the answer if there is a question.... _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Jack, I believe I have seen a string tree on some older GFI steels. _________________ Amateur Radio Operator NA4IT (Extra)

I may, in fact, be nuts. However, I am screwed onto the right bolt... Jesus! |

I recall someone here making a locking string tree for those strings. |

I've got a steel with a rattling 6th string (at the roller nut) because of inadequate down-angle. I've eliminated noise by reverse-winding the string on the peg. If I played this guitar more (it pretty much stays in the case) I'd have looked into fabricating some sort of string tree long ago.
I know this is a whole other thing than the tone subject but... |

That's one advantage of a keyless tuner head. |

I'm in total agreement with you...you're overthinking.

Hahaha, I guess that settles that! I should be practicing instead of inventing problems... Thanks for the input fellers. |
