The only time I saw and played a little on a Canopus was in 1990, when my niece was getting married at the Halekulani Hotel and Barney Isaacs (!) was in the band in the bar.
He showed me his guitar, D-8 Canopus, and it struck me as a cheaper version of a Stringmaster. He said it was an expensive guitar so I didn't volunteer my negative opinion of his horn.
At $3400 I'd say they are significantly overpriced, but that's just MHO.

I have that model Canopus, bought it used from Greg Sardinha last year. It's a great sounding steel. The guy who makes them worked at ShoBud back in the 60's. $2K is about right for the steel new. I paid $1200 for mine, used. Alan Akaka, Casey Olsen and Greg all play various Canopus models. They make pedal steels, too.

The relative "worth" of products designed to make music can be debated to a standstill any which way. Canopus was making relatively high-grade "homages" to old Fender and Gibson non-pedal steels in Japan at a time when Hawaiian music was one of their cyclical, periodic obsessions. And the customers probably weren't terribly interested in trying to dig through Western sources - this is pre-Forum, even a lot of Hawaiians were playing them. This is pre-internet, even, if such a thing can be imagined. And the argument that just because somebody made "boards-with-strings" that were worth $XXX during one time period doesn't mean that their current (or former) "boards-with-strings" should be worth $XXX now... well, that one can go a lot of ways, huh?  No steel guitarist could ever be tricked into paying extra for a name or image.... |
