What are the electronic tuners you folks are using at home and on the job? Is it a different tuner than what is used on a six string electric or acoustic guitar? Thanks in advance. _________________ JusticeJudge |

Any chromatic tuner will work.
If you run a smartphone, there are many tuner apps out there: some free and some not. I use the $3.00 Cleartune. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Lane,
Do you use any sort of cable to line into your smartphone or just use the mic ?? _________________ Kevin Raymer

I have a plain iPhone 4 and use the Peterson app... I've tried both the Peterson cable and the Tascam battery-powered interface. If you use the cable you'll still need a buffer of some kind if you plan on leaving it in-line during performance... I plugged it straight into my Fender volume pedal's Tuner output and it sounded horrible, loaded it right down. No problems with the Tascam IX-Z... takes two AA batteries. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

Peterson sells a cable that costs $13. It works with any phone. That's what I use when I have to be quiet.
I don't believe in leaving a tuner inline. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I had the Peterson app on my iPhone5. But it was inaccurate, compared to my Peterson StrobeoplusHD.
I worked with a Peterson rep on this for a while and sent him a lot of documentation and audio files that he asked for. I never heard from him after that.
The Cleartune is a better tuner app and is accurate and compares with the Strobe tuners. However, I just keep it as a backup, but have never had to use it.
My StrobeoplusHD is what I carry in my steel seat. I have a custom set (Newman) for E9/C6 that only requires one program for each (except for one change on each neck) instead of one for opens and another for the pedals, like Peterson provides. |

After using many tuners of all types (stomp box, rack, clip-on, smart phone app, etc) both for PSG and six-string, I have settled on my favorite, the Peterson stomp classic. Great visibility, easy to use presets, capo tunings, dead silent switching and muting, can be tapped as a DI, and it is indestructible. |

My best tuner is my ancient tube Conn Strobe tuner. It's just great! |

Polytune - $5 app on the phone, $99 pedal. Runs off a standard pedal PSU - or battery - done and done.
I have a Peterson Stroboflip as well, but its sitting in a pile of dust because its one big expensive disappointment. I use it when I set up a steel and thats about it. _________________ Milkmansound.com |

I swear by the Peterson Stomp classic.
I can save my individual steels in it (an annoying process but is nice to have done)
It is true bypass and I am compeltey on the other side of Lane. I LOVE having a tuner in line... often I set up in the sun then it goes to shade and my tuning changes a ton.... or AC kicks on or something... I love being able to just tap the tuner and tune silently.. I don't tune the steel as often as a guitar during a set but I tune it pretty often.. it CANT hurt.
Plus the pedal is a great tool... it doubles as a great DI if you need it for another use.
And it is built like a tank. |
