First time build: If I have a 3/8" finger width, what size nylon tuning nuts/rods would I need? |

Pull rods range from 1/8" down to 5/64.
I know the smaller ones make for a lighter guitar, but I kinda like the solidity of 1/8" stainless.
Nuts are almost always 3/16" outside, with a hole slightly smaller than the rod (the threaded rod cuts the nylon nuts) _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

Thanks. looks like i'll go with 1/8" stainless threaded rods with, I assume 40 threads per inch.
I guess the nylon tuning nuts are because you can't fit any other type of nut on....you would not get clearance for tightening. |

Brass barrels like Sho-Bud is nearly the only other all-pull solution I've seen in use. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I don't think clearance has much to do with it. I am sure you could make tuning nuts of any sort of metal. It'd certainly stop you ( or at least slow you down ) from over-tightening.
But I imagine metal tuning nuts would wear the threaded rod end. The tuning nuts seem to be sacrificial material. |

No, the nylon nuts are used because they're cheap, they function well, and because they can be made easily to any length. Metal locknuts are made with the same size external hex, but they're more expensive, and can only be had in one (short) length, and that length isn't long enough to support a spinner. (They probably would wear the rod threads more, too.) I have a few on one of my old guitars, but they don't work as well as the long nylon nuts. |

The ones I've seen offered for sale sure weren't what I'd call cheap, considering their intrinsic value. CheapER than an alternative, maybe, but, nonetheless ... |

Dave, they're about a nickel each when bought in bulk. However, most people that sell them charge about fifty cents each...because charging less makes it not even worth their time to fill the orders. |
