I am reading Neil Young's biography "Waging Heavy Peace" It is a fascinating book to say the least. Something I read on Page 236 will probably freak out steelers all over the world. Although Neil did not sing or play a note on this song he says he has a vivid memory of the recording of it. He states that the steel part Jerry Garcia put down was not played on a pedal steel at all. According to Neil, Jerry came in with a "regular" guitar and a slide, put it on his lap in the control room and put the part down! Are you kidding me? If this is true it is one of the most amazing things I have ever heard concerning pedal steel sounds. Any thoughts folks?

Not possible - Neil either misremembered or perhaps at one point Jerry was sitting in the control from scoping out the tune in that fashion. The product we hear was not created that way. The book is a fun read.

I like this modern version too with Kathy Mattea,I think it's Steve Fishell playing the pedal steel,a great post-Garcia sound.

Thanks Olaf! He somehow stays close to the original yet adds something of his own. Also, the ladies are great.

Yeah I know there is no way that is not a pedal steel! I am sure Ole' Neil mis-remembered. It struck me funny the way he wrote it as a vivid memory every time he hears the tune though, that is why I put this post out there. Steve Hinson messaged me and said "don't believe everything you read Bob" and that is good enough for me!

Did Neil write 'Horse of no name'?

I thought Dewey Bunnell wrote it.

The band America actually wrote and performed some of the best Neil Young songs ever! They, like, sang in tune and stuff!

David, I'd never heard this before. What tunes did America write for Neil Young? They may have sung in tune, but Neil has had a much longer career and has been more popular if you consider the number of records, CDs etc he's sold even in the time America was together only. Still, please let us know what songs America wrote for him. Thanks, steve t

Steve,
I think David was joking because at that time America sounded so much like NY that everyone even mistook them for being NY. Dewey Bunnel even said that he wrote 'Horse of no name' in the style of NY. It was just a funny side trip.

Somewhere I heard that Neil Young's mom complimented him on "Horse With No Name".If it isn't true it should be Shocked

EDIT: That's a beautiful reading of "Teach".The steel part is pretty close to what Jerry played, but I'm certain he'd be the first to say it nails what he was going for.

As good as this version is lets not forget that we would not be hearing it today if not for the work of "Guitar Players pedal steel player of the year"

Dang! That Martin Gross version is just beautiful, and it shows the right player could do it on a non-pedal guitar. But I still think Neil is mis-remembering things.
Q for anybody who might know-I remember(I think)a thread here about Dean Parks doing some work for Crosby and Nash,so it's theoretically possible he played steel on this tune with them live.I'd REALLY like to hear that!

There is another Neil Young book from a few years back. I think it's called "Shakey". Among other things, they talk about how "Horse w/No Name" was "ripping off" Neil's sound. There was also a Stephen Stills book from some years back where it stated, if memory serves me, they traded Jerry's pedal steel playing for singing lessons for HIS band. Jerry also played on some other songs on that Deja Vu record but it was not used.

Bob Dylan has accused Neil Young of ripping off his sound, so it's kind of funny that America has been accused of ripping off Neil.

I'd love to hear those additional Deja Vu tracks with Jerry.
also, I'm not sure I believe that he'd only been playing steel for 3 months when he cut 'Teach'... forumite Pete Grant would know for sure!

I don't know if this link has been posted before but this is a cool website that has a lot of info about Jerry and a couple of videos of him playing pedal steel with New Riders of the Purple Sage, one of the video shows him noodling before a concert....pretty cool stuff.

You know, if Jerry Garcia hadn't taken up the pedal steel, there might not be a Steel Guitar Forum.

Just sayin'...
