I was reading the other thread about tape to CD and it sounded like it works well.
I have a bunch of guitar instructional and performance VHS tapes just sitting here and wondered if there was a cheap way to get them on to DVD or should I throw them all out and repurchase on DVD. |

They can be done on a PC, if you have a DVD burner and DVD maker program, but its a poor way to do it. It will tie up you and the PC for hours. You have to have an interface for your VCR to PC. You must then play the tape and "record" it to the PC's hard drive. After you have the video recorded on the PC you can then use the DVD Maker program (not just a DVD burner program) to assemble the DVD and burn it so it will play on any DVD player. It has to be properly "finalized" or it won't play on DVD players.
Best options are (1) have them done by a place that does that (e.g. Walgreens, etc) or buy a standalone VCR player/DVD burner. I purchased a combo VCR/DVD player/burner - much easier than all the hoops you have to jump through with a PC. |

I used Roxio "easy vhs to dvd" and it works pretty easy. You can record from vhs directly to a dvd without having to record to your pc. It also comes with a sound recorder that makes it pretty easy to record old records to cd along with an editor.
You can get it at amazon.com

There are combo players that will dub from DVD to VHS and from VHS to DVD. _________________ Gary Shepherd

Another thumbs up for the Roxio VHS to DVD.
It allows me to interface with VHS player,my reel to reel and cassette recorders, turntable (with a preamp),and both my Digital cameras, as long as I connect to them through their analog out connections.
However, if you want to capture the materials onto a hard drive, so you can do any editing of the footage or tracks before burning it onto a disc, other software is much better for this, even Adobe Premiere Elements. Just capture with the Roxio, and burn straight from there, or save to hard drive to do your editing.
This is allowing me to do simple capturing and edits on a new laptop that came with neither fire wire port, nor a burner. I copy my edited footage onto a thumb drive, and take it to another computer that has a DVD writer. |
