Thanks in advance.

Hey Howard--the lever stop is a grub screw, 4-40, 7/16" long, takes a 1/16" allen wrench.

You'll have to check the angle screw. Mine has a different type & size head. Might be the same thread. Not certain.

Thanks Jon,

I knew it was larger then a 2-56.

I broke the tip of one last night. No biggie.

I see them identified as "Cap Screws" at McMaster Carr, Available in either alloy or stainless steel.

Any idea which is stronger?

No, I don't. Just for clarity, the stop screw is headless--a straight threaded rod with an inset head for the wrench. The angle adjuster screw has a 'cap' and takes a larger allen.
This, of course, is all specific to my 1999 Carter.

Added info--the stop screw also has a nut to lock it. If you had a 7/16" 'cap' screw, you might need added length to accomodate a locking nut.

This isn't the stop screw. It's the screw that adjusts the hang position of the knee. No nut.

We still talking 4-40? I did measure another screw and it is 7/16.

Hang on--I misread your question. Let me pull the right screw.

Well damn. It is smaller than the lever stop. But I don't have a tap smaller than 4-40 to match to the nut--oh yeah--my angle screws do have locking nuts.
So I can't measure the size and you are back to square one. Sorry, man.

Hmmm..Mine is larger then 2-56. I doubt that it is 6-32. Wonder if they used an "odd" size. I'll compare against my stop screw tomorrow.

Thanks for the effort, Jon!!

I had to buy some socket head cap screws once. I had to have longer ones to angle the lever in more. And they do have a nut between the cap and the knee lever to lock the screw down so it won't adjust itself when there is no pressure against it. I'm not positive, but I believe they are either 8-32 or 6-32. Buy one of each. They are cheap.

No nuts on any of my adjusters. The 4-40 is too big so a 6-xx and 8-xx would be way out of the question I'm afraid.

On my guitar it's either a 3-xx or metric ( Whoa! )

If you are talking about this screw (notice the locking nut), it fits into the 4-40 threaded hole in the pliers in the last photo.

The following knee lever stop screw fits into the 6-32 threaded hole in the pliers.

The screws in my crimping tool that also cuts screws, the socket head cap screw is in the 4-40 hole and the set screw is in the 6-32 hole. The picture is the best I could get of the pliers. I just took these out of my Carter just now. So unless you have a "special" Carter, or they switched screws at one point, the angle screw is a 4-40 (with a locking nut) and the knee lever stop screw is 6-32 (again with a lock nut). The guitar was made in Texas, so they aren't metric.

Richard,

You are correct sir!!

I found a Fastenal distributor nearby and they sized the screws for me and gave me a generous discount on a box of each.

The cup head stop screw is 6-32
The cap head angle adjust screw is 4-40.

On my guitar (2002) there is no stop nut for the angle adjust on any knee. I suppose that Carter thought them to be unnecessary at some point.

-edit- Looks like they used a drop of blue (mild) Loctite in lieu of the stop nut.

I got 100ea size for a ridiculously low price. Way cheaper then McMaster Carr, so..

In pursuit of good Karma, if anyone needs replacements, just PM me through the forum and I'll send you what you need (within reason) for the cost of postage. You can send me a self addressed stamped envelope and I'll send them off to you.

Oh..you'll need 6-32 nuts for the stop adjustment. They are readily available in small quantities.

Thanks to all for the assistance.
