I recorded the whole fitting process and balancing and played a few tunes through the Telonics rig, so as soon as I get a chance I will upload a video.
All done in 1 1/2 hours.
Another happy steelie leaves the fitting room.

PS. All models are available in the UK from Mark Dunn, although, I think he has had to put another order in already for more to be sent over.

His email is mark@traxcircuits.co.uk

David,
Any chance of a close up pic of the P/U to show the position of the pole pieces?

Thanks David,
Interesting compared to My setting.
Looks like You needed little adjustment.
With Mine I have the poles well down on the changer side of the first five strings and on the five lower strings I have the neck side poles well down.
best regards
Billy

I would imagine string gauges make a difference but, yes, I only remembered making minor adjustments

What does it do?

I mean; I've found the Alumitone to be a qualitative leap forward, but I don't even thing "string separation" exists as an actual function of a pickup, and I have never know what the hell people are talking about with the "breathy, yet woody, with a sparkling joi de vivre around 2136K" kind of tone talk. Laughing

Does it DO anything?

Does it do anything?

Yes, it simply 'picks-up' better than anything I've tried in the last 34 years.

I would like to know that too. From what I understand they are the identical idea with the adjustable pole pieces.

Billy.....
If it sounds balanced and sweet, don't worry, that's why they are adjustable...

Mike and Bent.......
I really don't know how they compare, that is one pickup I have never tried.
I did do a comparison to my previous pickup with the Beneath Still Waters video, but decided to edit the movie as I don't think I should be the person to show comparisons. All I can tell you is, try one, and you will hear for yourself. If you didn't like it, sell it on, but mine isn't going anywhere.

I can tell you a story. When Mark Dunn visited Telonics this year, he was asked to try a very large number of pickups on the same guitar. He was asked to make a choice....... Dave then said lets go to lunch........ They returned, and done the whole test again, and both times, Mark picked out this type as his favourite pup... I think many other steelies were involved in the trials...

I was also told that very specialised electronics measuring and audio measuring equipment was used to measure everything, even the type of insulation between the turns on the windings and stuff. Mark will probably see this and add more info on the design and measurement but, all I know is, I have tried it, played it, and keeping it.

I have one coming for the shobud too.

I have fitted another this week to another Rains and done a video of the change of pup from start to end and recorded a tune or two also.
I just have to piece it together and then hopefully get it posted to YouTube for you all to see.

Have a think, what's the most important thing in the signal path from steel to amp?
It's not going to be anything else other than the pickup, is it?

Re... Comparisons, I will leave it for you all to decide.....

David,
I worry about My ears, having worked in a noisy industry for a lifetime.Sometimes I have been told that My playing tone is on the "dark" side.I have tried many pickups and when I eventually tried the Telonics I (with the cloth ears) could definately hear a pleasing difference in clarity and all the other adjectives that We use.
A couple of weeks ago We did a pub jam session and two friends who I had not seen for some time were there.I hold these two guys in great esteem and they do know their stuff,Both of them said I had a superb tone like nothing I had ever attained before.
Dave Beaty has been a great help in everything,His after sales service is the best ever.He and Stacy have been a great help over the past couple of years.
I played last night with the five piece band and at the end of the evening I received several nice comments on tone, not on playing though Smile
I beleive You will be doing some demos in the Telonics room at Dallas in March,I look forward to that.

Well this has got me wondering, are we steel players playing to other steel players or to the public? Ok you as a steel player know what you want and how you want it to sound but do the people you are playing to know the difference between one pickup and another. Let's face it a lot of people don't even know what a steel guitar is never mind what pickup it's got on it.
I say it again, the big boys like LDG, BE, HR, WM, the list goes on, they did what they did with what was on the guitar and there sound I think is the sound every steel player would love to get. Let's face it, it is nothing to do with pickups. In my opinion David Hartley has proved that himself with the different guitars and pickups he's used he always gets a great sound. Hands and Heart are what count. Like I said MY OPINION.

Dave, I think we have two stages at which we swap out pickups.
1: in the early days, when we try to use toys to overcome the weaknesses of our hand.
2: later on, when we have that sorted out, and realize that some pickups will accentuate our individual tone better.

I still think it's just nibbling around the edges
