Although the show was great and Darryl was really top notch , it was missing the Steel and Fiddles. The band was clearly excellent, the show was about as pro as you can get, but, still missing something.

There's still something to be said about going to a show and the artist sings his own tunes for two hours and you are real familiar with each of them.

Thanks for a good show Darryl.

LOL....ha well..just another "star" with ego bigger than s**t...LOL ... I don` care much about country music these days, there is hardly anyone who can sing worth a s**t... these days I rather drive a city bus around Nashville than to put up with ego maniacs on the road... if that is the attitude he gave you in those few minutes can you imagine what kind of attitude his band has to put up with while with him on the road....LOL..no, sorry, no thank you..I`ll keep my day job...

Db

ps

or actually, when I think about this a little, he may not even be able to afford a steel guitar... as popular as he is, he may, very well, not even have cash to pay a steel and fiddle player...

Darryl had a steel player at one time named Eddie Gossien and a fiddle player named Lee Thomas when he started in country music. Last I heard, Eddie was playin' steel gigs in downtown Nashville. I saw Darryl two times in concert before Eddie left the band. I think his music is great, but I loved the fiddle and steel in his songs.

He didn't come across as having much of an ego at all, 3 of his band members have been with him a very very long time. Darryl actually came across as a very humble guy just trying to earn a living in a very tough industry.

The comment above, what was the context ?

maybe someone said to him

"You suck without a Steel Player"

I can tell ya this, his band was smokin', very tight very professional...

I doubt someone came to him and said "you suck without steel and fiddle" ....somhow I just don`t see that happening... as far as his band was tight thats fine, Britney Spears band is tight too but I don`t care much about it...and to know if he is a humble or egomaniac you would need to work for him...but like I said, I don`t care much (if at all) about him or his music, so I don`t care if he has na ego or not, I`m just thankful I myself don`t have to deal with those "super stars" wanna be`s any longer...if you like him go ahead, have yourself a ball...I`m going to go ahead and watch "Shrek" with my baby girl...it is a tight cartoon.. Wink

Sounds like Darryl has the typical new country band. Loud drums and hot guitars. If it works for him, have at it.

Whats up with you guys ? Kinda stretching the thread dont'ch a think ?

Darryl put on a great show , no loud drums , no loud guitars , he played all of the tunes he wrote that were on the Country charts and he played and sang them great.

It's kinda disappointing how you guys are elaborating and you were not even there. No Steel Guitar does not mean " NO Country Music "

Let me know the next time any of you put on a 2 hour show of songs that you wrote and have been on national radio over the past several years.

I have been playing out on Telecaster the last year, I guess I don't play Country anymore according to you guys...

You guys do realize that if Norm can't make a gig, Merle goes without a Steel , right ? Does that make Merle less Country ?

Tony, it's just a matter or opinion. If you or anyone likes [country ?] music without a steel that's great. For myself if I go to a club that says [COUNTRY] Before I spend my money I ask[is there a steel guitar player in this band] If the answer is no I just head on down the road.Just [my opinion] NO steel, NO country. Same with Blues bands again [just MY opinion]No B-3 or Tenor horn,NO blues. YOU BETCHA, DYK?BC.

Charles, that's fine by me, but pontificating about loud guitars, loud drums, comments about Steel players etc..that's a whole different thing...

So if f you went to see Merle and Norm wasn't there, would you leave ? It wouldn't be Country Music ?

I don't go to shows to see Steel players per say, I went to see Darryl Worley, and he was there and put on a great show.

I also went to see Marty Stuart a few days ago, no Steel player, so is the argument that Marty doesn't play Country music ? Good gosh I hope not.

Country appears to be in an anything goes, musical free for all state lately, so I suppose anything can be called country. I'm sure Darryl put on a good show, and I'd glad you liked it, but I have to agree with Charles. I don't care for country without a steel guitar.

If I had tickets for a Merle show and I found out he wouldn't have a steel player, (don't have to be Norm) I'd stay at home. It's just a matter of personal taste and what you want to hear. (if his horns were absent, I wouldn't be at all upset)

I don't care for seafood, so I don't frequent Red Lobster unless I have to. That's not to say they don't have good food, and they certainly are successful, it's just a matter of what you want to eat.

If you want to play Tele in a band without a steel, have at it. If that makes you happy, who cares. That's your business.

I've opened for Darryl Worley. Not only is he an excellent country singer, he is a heck of a nice guy. The musical arranegents in his band were outstanding as was the singing. Yes, it borders on country rock, but no where near Rascal Fats. Darryl puts on a great country show. Yes, I wish steel and fiddle were in it, but it wouldn't stop me from seeing him. Same with Jeff Bates.

I've learned that absence of steel is a good indication that this is the type of music that's being played. Presence of steel doesn't guarantee anything. Don't get me wrong, I have the utmost rspect for these musicians, songwriters, Darryl, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, etc... and most of them are probably super nice guys. I'd probably enjoy hanging out with them, but I don't want to listen to their music.

I know broccoli is good for you, but if it's on the buffet, I'll pass it by. This doesn't mean I hate the chef that prepared it, or that he's not a nice guy. We've got to get over this association of dislike of someones music being considered as some kind of personal attack. Some of my best friends hate my music because they are country rock fans. That don't keep us from being the best of friends. Smile

I never said I didn't play out without a Steel, I said I am on Telecaster in this band. We have at times played out 4 piece where I may return to double duty but my primary has been the 6 string this past year or so...but my primary daily practice is on Dobro, go figure.

Tony,You mentioned Merle without Norm. Used to play a fairly large club,Almost every weekend would have a name star come in.One week Merle and his band was supposed to be booked,He was sick and did'nt make it. I was dissapointed big time,Not because I missed Merle BUT because I did'nt get to see Norm. A while later we opened for Conway just a few weeks before he passed. As they were setting up Conway's band I noticed [NO STEEL] was set up. I asked the bass player [Think it was Mr. John's brother] Where Mr. John was . He said Conway was'nt using steel anymore, wanted to change his style. Another disapointment missing Mr. John, we did our little opening act,I packed my rig up and left,No steel,No country. Think about it over the years some of the biggest stars in country that the steel more than ANY other instrument was the defining sound to their style. Hank with Mr. Don,Eddy with Little Roy,Conway with Mr.John,What would Vince's [Look at us] be without Mr. John,Hank Thompson Without Bob White,Wills without Leon.Little Jimmy or Earnest without the two Buddies, etc. I still say NO steel,NO country. YOU BETCHA, DYK?BC.

I like broccoli, I like some country rock, and I don't mind listening to country music without steel (so long as it's a good song).

Ruth, here's some contact information. Most likely you can find out for yourself the answer to your question - better hurry though. Does anyone know if he has ever used a steel in his live shows?

Barry - see above where Brett identified the steel and fiddle players in Daryl's band. I suppose it's typical of today's Nashville country artist..... When they are hot they have steel and fiddle, and when they start to cool off, that's the first two things to go because they are the least important instruments in the modern country bands. I don't think the majority of concert attendees would notice, or even care, if the band has a steel or fiddle.

No steel and fiddle is fine, but if the light show or fog machine went down it would be a crisis. Laughing

In SoCal we were often referred to as the "floating fifth piece.." Oh Well
