I want to raise my 1st string F# to G# and am not sure what gauge string to use. It is now a .013
I also want to raise my 7th string F# to G#. What would be the best gauge...it is currently .026
My neck scale is 25" so I am not sure if my current gauges will accommodate a full step raise.
I did some searching on this topic and found it to be a popular pull, but there is no mention as to what string gauges are used.
Thanks for any advice!

Might be worth trying this first:

Now that I say that, I don't know what acceptable ranges of tensions are, but a .011 @ G4 ( the high-risk 3rd string ) runs about 27.6 lbs so above that thar be demons. |

Ask the mods to move it. I use a 13 and it goes to G# with ease. On MSA, Zum and Bud. I should think the standard. 026 should go on 7, but I don't do that. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

How does the longer scale affect what string to use? I've never had a 25" scale guitar, so I don't know. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Is it keyless? The changer pull shouldn't be an issue as long as the string can handle the tension. I run a .026 and it works fine. The pull is long but doable (I'm on a keyed guitar). |

It is a keyless changer...25' scale neck. I also have a keyless 24 1/4 scale neck. |

Hi Tom:
.012 on the first string and .024 on the 7th string on the 24-1/4 scale. Don't know about the 25" scale.

Thanks Niels.
Bob addresses the string gauge for long scale neck in his article. Appears a .012 works best for F# with 25" scale.
Very informative article. |
