HI I have a Amistar roundneck Tricone set up up with raised nut. I was wondering if the tone would be improved with a different 6 inch cone. Also, where could I get one if this was the case.

Thanks, David

When I purchased my 1929 Style 1 some years ago, it had some sort of chemical reaction between the metal of the soundwell and its original cones that caused the cones to partially disintegrate. (The instrument spent most of its life on the Texas Gulf Coast in the salty air -- don't know whether that had anything to do with the corrosion or not.)

The instrument was playable, but sounded somewhat buzzy and distorted. I bought and installed replacements from OMI in Southern California, and thought it sounded pretty good.

At the suggestion of a noted and recently deceased tri-cone player of considerable acclaim, I purchased and installed a set of cones from the new National Company in SLO. The difference was like night and day.

There may be other cones available that are just as good if not better, but the ones from National Resophonic worked out great for me.

As far as I am aware three outfits spin tricone sets, Beard, Quarterman & National.

I'm not familiar with the Amistar cone/alloy so I don't know if any of the above would be considered an improvement.

Republic offers hand-spun Continental cones for Tricone guitars:

I have a Republic square neck Tricone which is a very nice instrument and receives her fair share of compliments when she gets to play out. I bought her used, but I have no reason to believe that her cones have been replaced (or artificially enhanced).

HTH.
