Not necessarily big cajones. Study after study confirms that incompetent people don't realize they are incompetent. Apparently you have to have a baseline level of competence to realize your efforts aren't cutting it.

I see this in my own playing: What I can hear increases the better I get, so I realize anew just how much I suck, and keep working to improve.
