Check out Brad Sarno's stuff. I have his V8 octal preamp and I love it. His other pre amps are amazing also. If you don't have that sort of money I had very good results with a Furman 3 band parametric pre.

I've had a Revelation for about a year. All positive review from me. Lots of controls to color your tone and all tube. Expensive, but it's the last preamp you'll ever need.

I have tried many different pre-amps but always go back to a Tube Works Blue Tube pre-amp. They even made one with a steel mod. They aren't made anymore but oft times you can find one on e-bay.

Kevin,
There was a smokin' deal on a Revelation preamp recently here on the forum. You can't go wrong with that!
And look at this -http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=257088
Holy cow !

I swap back and forth between my Evans HV preamp and just straight into a NV112.

I seem to get more positive feedback when I plug my steel into a pot pedal, then right into my NV112. I use the internal reverb and no delay.
Comments from people like Doug Jernigan, Roy Rosetta and Tommy Dodd, saying I had the best tone at a show is pretty reassuring that I will stay with the NV112 and nothing else (as least not for now).

Sarno SMS to an MPX-1 to a Furlong SPLIT. Like my brother Ferguson said, sometimes I just go to the NV112. It's hard to beat and easier to tote!

Let's face it guys, for 90% of us, the limiting factor is not the gear.

Yes, but when the gear sounds good, it makes me want to practice more!

Myself I use the Walker Stereo Steel. It is totally modular and has one killer sound. Plus two speakers in different cabs. Once ya play through that combination you may never play through a single speaker system again. The Walker Stereo Steel is made by a guy who has been playing for almost 40 years. Thinks he knows what the system should be able to sound like and offers the options a steeler wants. Ya, it is a bit of money but if ya want first class sound ya pay for what ya get. It has always been that way. Buy at Mustang prices and you do not get the Porsche.

Sarno preamps!!!! I have a Revelation and would get rid of my guitar before I'd give up my Revelation. Seriously, once you plug into one of Brad's preamps you'll fall in live with their tone just like I did.
