Anyone try a G tuning on a Weissenborn? Also, has anyone tried steel dobro strings. I know this is outside the box but I have a set of Dr. Dux steel dobro strings so it could be interesting.

I have a modern Weissenborn and I frequently play both high and low open G. I may be living on borrowed time but I haven't had any issues thus far. I have used Dobro string sets. JP makes Weissenborn sets specifically for various tunings. But I use the low G strings for GBDGBD without a problem. Hope this helps.

I use D'Addario EJ42's (their standard reso set) on 25" scale weissenborns frequently. They work just fine, and I buy them by the fistful for my dobros.

I have an import Weissenborn style guitar that I use with a low bass G tuning, low to high DGDGBD. Being that the less expensive imports are generally not braced strongly enough for any type of G tuning, I made a custom bridge support piece. It's fashioned after the JLD Bridge Doctor. See attached pics. Aside from the low G tuning, I also use open D and DADGAD. Not shown is the dowel that extends from the bridge support to the end block.

I use the regular GBDGBD G tuning on my Goldtone Weissenborn without any problems.
I don't use heavy gauge strings. Light gauge regular guitar strings seem fine. The ones on it now are GHS "Electric Hawaiian Lap Steel E tuning." 56-42-32-24-17-13. Weissenborn strings are 62-17 which seem kind of heavy.

Thanks for the replys and info. I have a set of Dr. Ducks dobro steel strings and my Benoit Weissenborn has an LR Baggs pickup with a 9 volt battery. You have to remove the strings to replace the battery so I will install a new battery while changing the strings.

I report on the tone and feel of these new strings.
