Hey guys. I am curious to see if I need to upgrade the pickup in my pedal steel guitar. I'm getting a buzz from it and it also picks up mechanical noise from the pedals and even if I knock on the body of the guitar. I use George L cables...all tested for good connections. I have a Magnum Pro steel guitar.
Is this normal?
What do you guys do about noisy pickups? buzz? shielding?
Also taking pickup recommendations....something nice and clean, punctual.
Thanks for all the advice! |

Have you checked for connections between pickup and jack? I suspect weakening connection at the jack.
A microphonic pickup could also cause this.
But if you have time and solder, I'd throw an hour at the guitar before I threw money at it.
If you decide to swap pickups, I like the Jerry Wallace TrueTone if you like single coils. For humbuckers, the Bill Lawrence 705 is hard to beat. I have heard good things about the ToneAligner from Bob Hoffnar, but I have not yet dialed mine in. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Yup, I'm thinking I have a microphonic pickup. Thanks Lane!
I have heard about that Bill Lawrence pup...I think I'm due an upgrade anyway. I'll check that out! |
