Hey guys. I am curious to see if I need to upgrade the pickup in my pedal steel guitar. I'm getting a buzz from it and it also picks up mechanical noise from the pedals and even if I knock on the body of the guitar. I use George L cables...all tested for good connections. I have a Magnum Pro steel guitar.

Is this normal?
What do you guys do about noisy pickups? buzz? shielding?

Also taking pickup recommendations....something nice and clean, punctual.

Thanks for all the advice!

Have you checked for connections between pickup and jack? I suspect weakening connection at the jack.
A microphonic pickup could also cause this.
But if you have time and solder, I'd throw an hour at the guitar before I threw money at it.

If you decide to swap pickups, I like the Jerry Wallace TrueTone if you like single coils. For humbuckers, the Bill Lawrence 705 is hard to beat. I have heard good things about the ToneAligner from Bob Hoffnar, but I have not yet dialed mine in.

Yup, I'm thinking I have a microphonic pickup. Thanks Lane!

I have heard about that Bill Lawrence pup...I think I'm due an upgrade anyway. I'll check that out!
