#13 string

I had a note in 'Steel on Web' 'Workin Man'. My question was, how is the #13 string working out and what brand is holding up? I'm interested in using that number on my 3rd string. I believe I saw a quick note about it sometime ago. Presently I'm using #12.

There are a few of us using a 13 on the 3rd. string. Myself and I believe Bill Dearmore are using them on our Zums. I've been doing it since '07. The tone is a little thicker but the breakage is about the same as the 12's I used before. Ever couple months or 6-8 gigs.

The feel is maybe a hair stiffer, but not bad at all.

Brands don't seem to matter long as it's one of the major ones packaged for pedal steel. I have similar results with Geo. L's or SIT's.

I don't know how this gauge would work if you lower #3, or on other brands as I have not tried it on my keyless guitars, but that was what was on the Zum when I acquired it and it seems to work really well on it. I confess, it do hurt when it break but don't they all?

Jerry, thanks for the info. The clip I have on 'Steel on Web',I use a #12. Like you mentioned, the thicker string does give it more body and I like that. I don't mind changing the string a week early.

Since you tune down to Eb9 and a .013" apparently works for some people on E9, why not try it and let us know how it works for you?

Here's a follow up comment for the .013 string on my Zum. I used the .013 for a couple years as the third string. I loved everything about it except there are several more added pounds of pressure on the changer finger where the string makes contact with the finger. After so long a time the string begins to eat at the finger forcing some removal of the metal to resurface the finger where the string and finger make contact. As of this writing I have gone back to the .012's. Not as much body but certainly better than the .011's. Makes you wonder if a harder material for the finger would fix this. I don't see why not. My 2 cents worth... Smile

I accidentally put a .022 on the third. It was stiff as hell, but the G# tuned up and so did the A. It didn't break in the day or so before I realized my booboo.

Interesting how tolerant some strings are. The first time I fitted LiveSteel strings, I went to bring the .011 string up to pitch and it snapped the first time I pressed the B pedal. Fortunately I had an Ernie Ball .011 to hand - I bought ten a while back just in case - but I'm still none the wiser.

You'd think a .011 would take the pitch, no questions. It did snap at the retainer on the keyless head, so maybe it was some irregularity there that marred the surface and raised the stress enough locally to snap it.

I'm with Richard on this. Wouldn't even dare try bringing a 0.013" up to G#, let alone step on the B pedal. I'm not saying I'm handsome, but I like my face the way it is – unslashed... Wink

Fellas, the .013 works on the Zum...none of my other guitars will handle it.
