No longer made is the key! That is why I just picked up a Zumsteel S-12 made in 2005, but now I know why they are so highly thought of.

I would say the closest you can get and buy new is the encore. It has pro level zum mechanics. Otherwise, used zum is only option.

I fear it is sad to say that there just aren't any..

I guess that's why the last one listed here lasted less than 8 hours.

I searched every Craig's list in the United States and only found ONE for sale.

I know Craig's List ain't exactly a steel guitar clearing house, but.....

Just sayin....

The Justice looks and feels pretty close. Haven't played one through my rig. Not sure how deep the resemblance goes.

Here's 2 more to think about >

Frank Carter's Infinity or
Gary Rittenberry's latest Rittenberry -
I forgot the name of his latest model but
2 more great guitars to choose from.

I don't think there are any. Just like "what guitar sounds like an Emmons PP" - NONE. Or what guitar sounds like a Franklin - NONE.

Well Ron, unless you know something I don't, Frank at Infinity is not taking any more orders as of last month, and Gary would not build an S-12. I think the only people building an S-12 are MSA and Mullen. Maybe GFI?

Jerry Fessenden will build a 12, last I heard.
Given the association with Zane King, and descended from Beck, I bet Dan Burnham at BMI does.
There was a thread a while ago about who makes 12s.

But nobody is gonna mistake a BMI for a Zum. Fessys seem built in the same basic style, but I can't speak for their similarity to the Zum, I've only spent an hour or so behind one of Jerry's guitars

I am asking more of the action than looks and sound. I've only tried one Zum and the pedal throw seemed incredibly short, and light.

I own a Williams and have looked at the Zum top and bottom and think they are very close in many ways.

I didn't say Rittenberry never built one. But he said no to a 12 string in Dallas.

To answer a few here:
Bill - I still stand by what I said above>

Frank Carter's Infinity or

Gary Rittenberry's Prestige Model

These naturally will not sound the exact same as a Zum
but they are getting a LOT of attention for some reason?

Niels - I know nothing about how busy each of the builders are as I have not spoke to either of them since the Dallas show
but I also did not know Bill was talking about a S-12 when I made the recommendation.

My best to everyone - buy what you like - just making a suggestion was all.
Ron

In my opinion, I would have to say the Justice guitars are closest to a Zum. Maybe a Mullen G2 for the pedal action. I think the pedal action on the G2 is better than any guitar made today, though. But, you know what they say about opinions.

I'm not 100 % sure but I believe the undercarriage of a Williams guitar (which I do own) is very similar to that of a Zum. The cross rods mount to a continuous metal plate on the inside of the front apron and on the rear apron the cross rods mount directly to the wood body in delrin bearings and both the Williams and the Zum having a removable access bar at the outside of the rear apron.
