What would a G6 tuning be that would give me C6 intervals across all six strings, or any alternate tuning using standard gauge dobro strings? Squareneck dobro. I've tried to figure this out but I keep getting confused. _________________ GFI SM10 3/4, 1937 Gibson EH-150, 2 - Rondo SX Lap Steels and a Guyatone 6 String C6. Peavey 400 and a Roland 40 Amps. IF--
your C6 is
C E G A C E
the G6 equivalent is
G B D E G B
IF your dobro set is for
G B D G B D
then you could move your high G & B strings up one slot to 2 and 1 but you'd be needing a single to make your 3rd string E. Whatever gauge your middle D string is, something a hair lighter.
I have no experience to suggest a tuning using an exact GBDGBD string set. |

I've had good luck with A6th tuning using standard dobro strings.
1. C# (down a half step from D)
2. A (down a whole step from B)
3. F# (down a half step from G)
4. E (up a whole step from D)
5. C# (up a whole step from B)
6. A (up a whole step from G) _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Thanks guys...I've considered A6 but I'm not sure about twisting that big G string any tighter than it is on this $200 dobro _________________ GFI SM10 3/4, 1937 Gibson EH-150, 2 - Rondo SX Lap Steels and a Guyatone 6 String C6. Peavey 400 and a Roland 40 Amps. Behringer Reverb Pedal. |

Again:
http://www.b0b.com/infoedu/gauges.htm
You cut'n'paste it into your word processing program, blow it up to fill a page, then you print a dozen and hide them all over your house. AND IT TELLS YOU WHAT TO DO. This is IT, this is all the answers about all the tunings, this is beer that sweetens your breath and helps you lose weight, this is Sofia Vergara on a biscuit with gravy, this is chiseled into the marble at the Pearly Gates.
But you're not dead yet so you have to print out your own. Cranking strings UP much is pretty exciting, specially if they're already tense, but it's surprising how far they can go down and still work. The treble strings can go down three half steps, even four frets maybe. Not so lucky on the lower strings. |

My buddy Konabob has gotten a lot of mileage out of this G6:

Jim, I personally like to tune my low G down to E, and leave the rest of the guitar tuned to the standard dobro tuning. That's how phenominal player, Greg Booth does it. Search youtube for some of Greg's stuff. You WILL be impressed. _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |

IMHO, it doesn't matter which 6th tuning you use: C6, A6, G6, E6 (aka C#min7). The real advantage is having the 6 and 1 notes in the tuning, which is the 3 and 5 notes of the IV chord. It gives 2 "pockets" to play around - where the I chord is and where the V chord is. I've jammed with Konabob and watched him play. He's very good on his self-made G6 steel. For example, a lot of Hawaiian songs (Haole Hula, e.g.) have a IV, VI, II change. You can get the VI chord on the 6 and 1 strings, slide ddown 1 fret and get the VI chord, then down 2 for the II chord. _________________ Jack Aldrich

I use BDEGBD on a 6 string Rickenbacker. It works for me. |
