Perhaps one should pay attention to EVERYTHING one's doing?

Allows it to expand and contract with temperature changes without binding. I think.

I might. To hold the lead to the deck. But I expect I'll use the retainer at the top of the pic.

Carl, here's ANOTHER "Hey, dummy!" moment.
I've rodded up FOUR guitars from scratch (I think), each time I ran the rods through the fingers, and eyballed the bellcrank location.
ONLY SUNDAY did it occur to me to measure the distance from apron to finger for each string, then measure the apron-to-bellcrank distance on each cross-shaft. Probably shaved two or three hours of work.
When I shared my eureka moment with Denise, I got a "duh".

Trust me Lane, those of us who have been around this contraption for a long while (like you of course) are going to have those infamous "Big Duh" moments:!: As you know, what counts is the "Ah Ha" moments that make you feel like you've whipped the problem and share your success with others. Carry on brother...Carl

Don't worry, Lane. With only 4 pulls in your guitar, it will be easy to fix. Razz
